Bridge Clearance Class C 11'4"

Has anyone had any clearance issues with the low clearance bridge on Texas 63 on the border of TX and Louisiana?

My Class C is 11'4" per specifications.

How much clearance is it listed as having?
When in doubt: go around!

??? You have almost a foot of clearance on the bridge.

If you get stuck would have added more than 1 hour

Bridge Clearance

DW wanted to verify if anyone with a class C had any issues with clearance as bridge vertical levels are not always accurate.

Just got this class C, had to detour around this bridge when we had a fifth wheel.

If the lack of clearance isn't worrisome enough... how about winding up in the river below? That much surface rust is usually an indicator of serious hidden structural weakness.

I see it over and over again in Ohio and West Virginia - and it's getting more prevalent. When was the last THOROUGH inspection of that bridge? Paint isn't just to make it pretty; it's to slow oxidation. If it looks bad on the surface, it's probably a risk... especially rolling 10 tons on it.

Maybe drive the long route... then call your state representative and ask what your taxes are being spent on... because it SURE ISN'T maintenance on that bridge!

I would not lump all Class C motorhome heights together just because they are Class Cs. Around 11 feet tall is very common but a large percentage can vary between 10 and 12 feet, with some outside that range.

By the way, that bridge looks pretty narrow too on photo. I would hate to lose a mirror if there was another wide vehicle coming the opposite way.

who to trust Louisiana, Texas or Thor

I trust "me" get your tape measure, find the highest spot on the mh, antenna, ac or vent covers and measure if your like "me" you'll need to write it down now where did I put it

One more comment, the last time the bridge was resurfaced was it remeasured?

I was told by a highway worker that clearance signs are not very accurate. They may have been once (or not) but as road surfaces are repaired or replaced clearances can change significantly. The signs are not updated. Have you ever noticed that exit signs (like an exit will be in a half mile) often are off by quite a bit compared to your GPS? Sometimes as much as 10-20%. That sort of shows how much the highway department cares about accuracy. I’d have gone around….

Heights

Having had a very bad experience on a parkway with low clearances in our Freedom Elite (which according to measurement is about 12 ft highest point) I wouldn't trust that!

I've been there.

there are two ways around this bridge and I have used both. One is to go north out of Burkeville, Tx and go over the toledo bend damn. You end up north of Leesville, La. No problem with my Class A with 12 ft 6 in height. The other is to continue East on US 190 out of Jasper, Tx and go to Deridder, La. The DeRidder route is longer.

Thanks, ended up going via 190 to Deridder when I had my fifth wheel.

After measuring we wrote our height on a piece of masking tape and put it on the dash. This was after the border patrol had to stop traffic across 5 lanes so we could go thru a high enough lane.

Guy

We bought a Garmin specifically made for RVs. You set up the Garmin with the height, width and length of your RV and it will choose a route which avoids problems. When inputting the height add extra inches just to be safe. Some tunnels do not permit vehicles with propane tanks so the Garmin will reroute around those tunnels.
