DEF fill woes Magnitude BH35
Am I the only one having issues filling my DEF tank?
Trying to fill my DEF tank at half full results in immediate regurgitation out the spout. Same thing at the pump. Should I be waiting til it’s nearly empty, or should I be looking for an air relief hose kink?
I was able to fill the tank once at the pump when the tank was almost empty...

I bought one of those little fluid transfer pumps that are battery operated.
They work pretty darn slick, and are easy to find on E-Bay or Amazon.

I usually refill when it is about half empty or so. Never had any issues filling it up. There might be something blocking the tube feeding the tank. Try looking down inside or use and cellphone camera to look into the tank. You can get one on Amazon at a reasonable price. Or you could just push a coat hanger down in the spout to see if it is clogged but be careful.

I do the same: it gets topped-off at the halfway point...

I have an SV34 and I have not had any issues filling the DEF tank. Although even after 10,000 miles I have only added to it twice.
Have you tried using the Ford recommended DEF filler tube for 1 and 2.5 gallon containers?
https://www.amazon.com/Motorcraft-NO.../dp/B008B5WVF8
I also use the 2.5 Gallon bottles to fill it and don't use filling stations.
I have found that for diesel, the truck filling pumps have too high of a flow rate and the fuel will bubble up and keep shutting off the pump. The F-550 has pluming from the filler neck to the tank and a 90 degree bend so the high flow backs up.
I try to use Auto Diesel pumps.... it's a little tougher with a toad but I usually can find them.
Tractors have wide open fuel tanks with no plumbing so they can take fuel delivery as fast as the pump can give it.

I got the Ford DEF Filler hose (Ford Part# PM-27-N) and it works great and you cannot overfill, it fits both size DEF containers. Buy it at a Ford dealer as their price is much lower than Amazon or ebay

Had the same issue on mine, but it's a pretty easy fix. If you crawl under it, you'll find that the DEF fill hose is routed over the top of other cables/hoses on top of the frame. Take the hose quick release loose from the DEF tank and reroute the hose under the other cables/hoses, then reattach it. That little change gets the hose at least level, and it will fill. Also, take note to fill when the rig is parked somewhere that leans to the right, or if necessary, drop the jacks on the left to tilt it and it will fill easier. Should go 8-9K miles on a tank, so fill it full so you don't need to mess with it for awhile

I've had the same issues. The filler tube actually goes "uphill". I had to tap it up while filling, then hold the line up. It acts as if it has a one way valve, and once you get fluid flowing, it works fine-just don't stop once you get flowing. Hope this helps.

DEF Woes
I did indeed crawl under the rig to check the fill hose and as cbach and gmthrust noted, the hose is routed so that there's a dip in the middle.
I had the same problem with the rear diesel hose, so I guess I should have guessed earlier. Problem with the diesel was just a quick shutoff and not the explosive regurgitation.
I'll re-route the hose and retry filling. Thanks for the tip about the fill hose, I'm dropping it off at the Ford dealer tomorrow for service so I'll grab a hose there.
We just returned from a round trip for SLC, Utah to Charleston, SC. 5000 plus miles, so I was nearing the point where I finally *needed* to fill the DEF.

Amen! I can't say enough good things about our Maggie. We drove an average of 530 miles a day for 10 days, and it was a joy!
We're already planning another trip to warmer climes.

Hi Greybear
We will be heading out to Riverton Utah in mid December to visit friends who just moved there from California. We usually stay in Draper at Mountain Shadows RV. We went out there several times in the past 2 months helping them find a home to buy. Started looking in Spanish Fork and finally found a nice one in Riverton.

Hi Bob
In Utah my friends do have light snow right now. They say it is cold. Here in So. Calif. we are hitting mid 40's at night and mid 60's to low 70 during the day.

So much for Winter in Utah...
We're looking for a place to retire to...
But they've got to have a bit less Winter than what we usually see here.
(40" of while snot, and January temperatures down in the high teens...)

Cool! I've heard good things about Mountain Shadows, but never stayed there.
If you're coming in December, bring you skis, looks like we're going to have a good season!
Bob,
We returned from SC last Wednesday, right ahead of the first significant storm of the season, 25 during the days and 12 at night. However we're already back to 40s during the days and mid 30s at night. That said, wintering ins Salt Lake is not something most folks from other locales contemplate....
Most folks head for southern Utah. St George run in the 50s to 60s through the winter most years. Lots of folks are also moving to Mesquite NV, just an hour SW of St George along I-15. No income tax, nice and warm in the winter, and adulthood is legal there. That's where we usually end up 4 wheeling and RVing when we want to get out of the white stuff for a while.

On my 35SK, the DEF hose was kinked several times behind the storage bay by the frame. I ended up cutting about 18 inches off of the end to get a straight shot without the bends and kinks.

Greybear,
St. George you say?
I'll look it up.
Thanks for the "hot" tip!
