Generator Question

Good Evening, we own a 2005 Thor Four Winds Chateau Sport 28A and have a question on how to use the on board generator to power the outlets in the RV. When running, the generator supplies 12v to the lights and refrigerator but not the outlets. I just read that on some Class C homes of this vintage that there is an outlet in the shore cord compartment that is powered from the generator and the shore cord must be plugged into this. Any info greatly appreciated.

Greetings and Welcome

Did you check the 120v breakers on the generator?

1 - The generator DOES NOT supply "12v to the lights and refrigerator"; it supplies 120 VAC just like SP (lights and fridge control power will come from your house battery if no SP or generator). On a newer MH this is done through an Automatic Transfer Switch (ATS); on older MHs this is done as you mentioned, by plugging your SP cable into an outlet in an outside compartment. You will have to determine if you have that setup. If not, then you will need to troubleshoot WHY you don't have 120 VAC supplied from the generator to the MH. Could be a loose connection, tripped breaker on the generator, or a bad ATS.

I found that everytime we change from generator or plug in power our GFI has to be reset. Ours is in the bathroom.

Yes, my 05 winnie had to be plugged into a receptacle in the generator bay.
It supplies power to your coach, batteries, converter/inverter and such.
It will look like a normal plug that matches the 30 amp cord.

You can always call Thor with the serial number. They can look up the specs.

I have the same exact RV and in order to power the 120vac outlets with your generator you need to plug the shore plug to the inside receptacle located in the storage compartment for the cord.

Still hasn't. I'm getting tired of responding to 1 thread wonders and reading responses to them a week or longer after the OP. Nature of the beast though.

If you have a plug in the shore power cord area, then when shore power cord is plugged in to the outlet that will allow the gen set to provide house current. I replaced that system with a transfer switch since I would rather not have to mess with a cord when I want to use the gen set and house power off the gen set.

Asks a question then never responds to people that take the time to help out. I think sometimes people join so many forums and then forget which one's they post things on.

And even then, it’s not the question that’s stupid, it’s the person who didn’t ask it.
