I want to add a second House battery to my Freedom Elite 30FE
All,
How do I decide what battery to purchase as a second battery for the house. My RV is 3 months old. Is there a requirement to "Match" the batteries. Note sure how to get started here. I boondocked and my heater pretty much exhausted my house battery the other night and I have some boondocking adventures coming up and its going to be colder then it was when this happened. What is your advice/recommendations?
Thanks

What size battery do you have, and how much room is there for the addition of a second battery?

Bob,
The tray seems to be designed to hold two batteries, according to Thor its a 12volt 27D. I am not well versed on batteries I assume some 27D's may have more amp hours then others?
thoughts?

They're all just about the same.
Two 27s would need just over 24" of space. (25" to be,safe...)
I'm going to move from my pair of FLA 27s: to AGM 31s when the time comes.

I’ve thought about adding a second house battery to our 30FE, but haven’t got around to it yet. The wiring schematic for the 30FE (found on the owner resources page on Thor’s website) shows a second battery (and an inverter) when the 30FE is configured with a “rental package” so there is room for two batteries under the steps.

There is room for two batteries in that tray. We added a second deep cycle. AGM and Lipo is just not necessary for how much we boondock, especially with a generator. We added the second battery just because they are cheap and there was room. I am not sure we have actually needed the extra aH.

From what I've heard you'll want to match the group size, the amp hours and the chemistry of the battery.

24/27/31 has to do with the physical size of the battery. Amp Hour is a different thing. You would be better off if you are gonna boondock a lot to go with 2 6-volt golf cart batteries in series. gc2 $90.00 sams club.
20 amp hour rate:215
5 amp hour rate:157
6 amp hour rate:156

It is the lead weight that matters lead acid battery. I.E. Walmart's group 29DC RV/marine deep cycle is $89.97 20 hr rate 122 amp-H @ 12 volts and 58.7 lbs. Plus it is VRLA so no water needed. Just saying there are several ways to to meet your electrical needs.
