Onan QG 4000 starts itself!

We've had this class C since 2018 and it's worked fine - until last year.

Going down the road, we noticed the inside light was on - and the generator was trying to start itself. It never did start, but this happened a couple of times. We could pull off and start the generator fine.

I went by the coach the other day, heard a hum, and we had a solid red light on generator itself.

We've called Cummins, read their troubleshooting, and have found nothing.

Anyone else have this problem and, if so, how did you fix it?

Thanks!

Did you buy this RV new?
Does it have an Automatic Generator Start system installed?

Hi,

Yes - we bought it new.

No - it does not have automatic start for the generator. We can "jump start" the motorhome engine from the generator if needed.

thanks!

I have a 2020 24F which is likely identical to yours. A couple questions:

When you say "We can jump start the motorhome engine from the generator"... could you explain in detail how you do that? EXACTLY which buttons/switches are you pushing, and where are they located?

When you say you hear a "hum"... can you hear the generator starter actually cranking the generator? Or is just a faint humming noise?

Hi,

Sorry - I misspoke about the jump starting business - there is an emergency start on the lower left of the dashboard that will use the house batteries to start the engine if the engine batteries have drained. So this does not involve the generator directly.

The last humming sound was just that - no cranking, the unit was just making a consistent sound and the light on the unit itself was solid red.

thanks!

That would be your fuel pump running in "PRIMING" mode. Normally actuated by holding the START button in the STOP position. I think you need to check the remote wiring harness plug near the generator for corrosion. If not there than trace the wiring harness back looking for chafing.
