2023 Class C WS31 on E450

This RV has two ac's and will run both on shore power, but it has only a 4000 onan at 30 amps, should I run only one AC or will it handle both on the genset. Cannot get a straight answer on this isuue.

You have 30 amps from SP or from the Onan. I’ve run both of our A/C units in our Class C on the generator, Max draw has been around 26 amps, so you have to be aware of what else you might run at the same time whether on SP or the generator.

What size A/C's? There are 11K, 13.5K and 15K BTU units. Double the surge amperage draw shown on spec tag, multiply that by 120...that's the watts you need to run both.

onan 4000

This a 4000 onan date of build was in 2022 and installed on my 2023 WS31 Thor. I have been having problems with getting the genset to run since purchase in March of 2023. I assume that there was bad gas in the genset from the six months it sat at a dealer, so I have been doping the gas tank on the RV heavy with SeaFoam and have the genset running for up to an hour, up from only 5 to 10 minutes, so there has been progress, I have a date for Warranty service with Onan, but it is not till the end of September and I have another trip before that date. The question now is whether the genset can operate both AC's at the same time, I understand the older ones would not operate more than one AC but the new shedding tech allows the WS31 to operate both AC's on shore power without any problem so I would assume that it would work that way when on the genset but need to clarify that. Today I ran the genset for two hours with one AC working, but when I turn on the second AC it shutdown within ten minutes. These are both 1100 units and as I have stated both run on shore power.

4,000 watts is 33.33 amps. My Mach 15 draws 15 to 18 amps depending on the outside temps and the voltage. With the outside temps about 106 F and the campground voltage about 110, I see 18.5 amps on the EMS. The Mach 8 HP uses about one amp less in the same conditions. If you try to draw more than 20 amps from a Onan 4000, the voltage will drop will drop significantly.

33 amps @ 120 volts is 3,960 watts; 33 amps @ 108 volts is 3,465 watts. The 8.3 horse power (70 F degrees and sea level) Onan 4000's air cooled engine is significantly de-rated by heat and altitude.
The answer to dry camping in the 105 F heat with two 15,000 btu A/Cs is power them by an Onan QG 7000 EFI. It weighs just 105 lbs more than the 4000 and is 3 inches bigger in every direction. It is a true 30 amps at 240 volt generator.

And the shutdown code was????

When Thor came out with the two 11KBTU on 30 amp SP and 4K generator there was a lot of discussion here about it. Bottom line is. They should run either way without issue as long as you don't run another large load like a hair dryer or microwave.

My 30 amp RV with a 4K Onan runs a 15K and 13.5K A/C at the same time but I am right at 29 amps. If it's really hot I'll switch the fridge to propane to give some margin.
