Agree some buyers have unreasonable performance expectations for what is essentially a motorhome, not a sports car.

RAM ProMaster engines make over 250 horsepower, and when powering a van camper that should weigh in 8,000- to 9,000-pound range, acceleration and hill-climbing performance is better than most large motorhomes.

Even at their maximum torque of 250 lb-ft, the newer 2022+ engines make about 190 HP at 4,000 RPM. Performance is extremely subjective, but by motorhome standards a RAM ProMaster is hardly underpowered.

In my opinion the biggest issue with pre-2022 ProMaster powertrains is that transmission gear spacing is horrendous by modern automotive standards. Drivers can adapt to this with a little patience though.

Today's motor homes are so much better than the coaches of yesterday. People forget that an old 1970s Winnebago on a Dodge chassis with a V8 engine had about the same, maybe less, horsepower and torque. They also had a carburetor that was temperamental and a 3 speed transmission. Plus they weighed more. The early 80s LeSharo, had a 66 hp diesel engine and manual transmission. Some owners do not realize how good they have it.
