California DMV Question

Hello Folks:

I am new to this forum but not to RVing. My wife and I lived fulltime in a 30' fifthwheel for about 9 years and may purchase a class B next. We may purchase sooner if we can park at our home in California but we have an HOA and while they would allow a standard van, the answer I got about parking a Thor class B was this; If the DMV reclassifies the converted van to a motorhome then the HOA rules would apply and it would not be allowed.

I checked with CSAA insurance and my agent said their registration person said they believe that the DMV does indicate a change in classification but was unable to confirm.

Would someone with a CA. registered class b be willing to share a snippet or redacted copy of the registration slip?

Sincerely,

DMV Report

I used the chat feature with the DMV today and the person said that the DMV does get involved when a manufacturer converts a van (like the Tellaro) but "normally" the DMV does not reclassify a vehicle to "motorhome" but I have to go into a DMV office to request written verification to take to my HOA Board.

In short I am still on the hunt for a copy of a California registration for a Thor class B and I attached a redacted copy of my car registration as an example. I am working with my local LaMesa RV dealer too so perhaps they can help but if you can help I would greatly appreciate it. By the way I tried Thor directly and they told me they do not know (hard to believe) and to ask the CA DMV.

Thanks,

How to register a vehicle is up to each state. Thor would not know or care how California registers you vehicle.

It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.

That is the answer I got from Thor. I thought someone there would have known (great ammo for a sales team) and made my hunt simple but...

Thanks,

I'm sorry no one has shown you their registration. That would indeed be easy.
And
I'm, right now, this week, semi-involved with
Commercial size f53 exbread-van type van vs f53 motor home.
The registration is MUCH different. About $1,100 a year more for the commercial than as an rv.
My ranch-hand is in the process of adding
The four things that distinguish rv from commercial vehicle/passenger van.
He will save $1,100 a year by adding those things. (Unverified by me, it's his project I'm only a sounding board)
But, this is Arizona not California.
This Arizona info is anecdotal/worthless at bbest and simply food-for-thought.

And
Asking forgiveness of any hoa I'd move in to would equate to a firm
'No, you knew the rules and you prayed we were stupid.'
And a $250 a day fine until you moved your rv out of the area.
Don't think for a moment the hoa won't ask for your insurance to verify van vs rv.

And
Call your insurance agent again.
There is no
I believe.
There is only:
It shows as a non commercial vehicle we insure as an rv(or any other DEFINITIVE answer they giive in writing.)
Ask them
What a class b says about van vs rv on any of 300 or so they probably insure and know of classification to a nut bolt and screw.

Punchline.
If you insure it as an rv...its damn well an rv.

Not with some HOAs.

We moved into a hoa ONCE.

boom got a not nice letter from hoa demanding we move boat ASAP
BOOM they got a nice letter from us asking them to enforce the hoa rules about 2 trees in every yard and for them to clean, mow and trim the common areas.
BOOMmmm got a extremely nice letter inviting us to attend a hoa meeting (first one in 2 years ) to discuss problems . They (both of them) were really surprised when 15 families attended
