Loose Roof Rack

So it was a Tallula Tellaro spa day and I was waxing the roof when I noticed that the roof rack was loose.

Thor didn’t install the foot for the rack in the right place so the little cleat never engaged the roof pin. To make matters worse they cross threaded one of the bolts and it broke as I tried to back it out. The attention to detail by Thor leaves a lot to be desired. They had to know that the foot was in the wrong place and the cleat never engaged. To cross thread screw the way it was done they must of torqued it down with a power driver.

None of my torx bits would get a good hold on the screw to move the foot to line it up correctly, it’s about 1/2” off.

Check your racks and make sure all the cleats are engaged, I never even noticed this when I moved the cross bars forward.

In the first picture I have circled the roof pin, you can the foot is about 1/2” off.

The second picture is of the cleat. Would anyone happen to know what this part is actually called? I searched Thule’s web site, and looked at my owners documents. I can’t find any feet that actually look like ours and nothing close to this cleat.

If anyone else discovers they have a similar problem the part is called, Thule SmartClamp System (L2H2). It is sourced out of Europe.

I called Thor today and they are checking into sending me what I need to do the repair myself.

I heard from Thor customer service today that they will be sending me the parts to make this right. Their quality control may not be as good as it should be, but so far the customer service has been good.

Where I may question Thor’s quality control, I give their customer service an A+. Today I received all of the parts needed to correct the install of my roof rack. Thor actually sent the entire rack.

I can’t help but to think with my prior USAF background in Maintenance Management and Quality Assurance that I couldn’t save them an absolute fortune on warranty work.

Nonetheless A+ on customer service. Thank you Thor.
