Beware of your storage

Maybe it's just me but it does seem like any bracing at all would have been better than none at all under a 100 gallon water tank.
I guess I was lucky the tank didn't fall through the rotten decking until I arrived at the RV park's check in shack.
This photo was obviously taken after I cleaned up the disaster, I wasn't really in the mood for photo taking during the check in process at the RV park while my tank was dragging on the road beneath the motorhome.
I only ever put about 1/4 of a tank of water in the thing anyway, thankfully.

I *think* they were supposed to put like a plastic cover sort of like what is on top of the decking but, there was none and so the plywood rotted from below. Never had a clue it was about to go.
This is a 2015 model so, if you have a Palazzo in that range you might check underneath and see if your compartments decking has a cover on it. I'm also adding what should have already been there, some angle to beef this up.

Some steel bracing under there would of sure kept that from happening. Wonder how many different models of Thor RV"s are out there with same time bomb waiting to go off.

Probably lots of them. We all know that Thor Industries' entire product line are nothing more than works in progress. They are built and sold as a kit with invisible defects that owners are supposed to find and fix.

my tuscany has similar "holdings"
mine has the black plastic stuff under the tank, and only three steel arms under the tank
i had to take mine out to fix a water tank fill issue and put in tank heater pads, of which were not installed...despite it being on the build sheets

great to hear you didnt have a worse event on the road

Just wondering, do the tanks sweat? Then drip condensation? That would cause the floor under it to rot. My fresh water is in the bedroom under the stationary bed pedestal.

To some degree I'm sure they must like any other water holding tank but even that, you know anything that holds water is going to leak eventually. Never mind that this tank happens to be in a moving, bouncing vehicle going across all types of road conditions.

If there is a funny part to this whole event it was that the tank fell out at the park check in which just happened to be one of those 10 years or newer parks for your RV.
I guess in the future when they ask the age I'll have to tell them, it's not 10 years old yet but it is a Thor.

It's not the years: it's the mileage!

No. It's the years and the manufacture.

Beware of your Storage - Water tank going through the floor?

Just bought my 2017 Palazzo 36.3 and installed a new electric power cord winder and electric water hose winder on the drivers side. Found the floor to have rotten plywood under the rubberized plastic which I replaced. So...I started looking at the other compartments and found that the water tank was sinking through the floor! It looked like about an inch or so. I decided to avoid a future disaster by bracing the floor under the tank using two 1 1/2" angle iron strips 4 feet long (available at Home Depot) to shore up the tank under the motorhome. I used self tapping screws to secure it (into the frame not the water tank :-) ). I used a hydraulic jack with a 2x4 on top to push up the floor under the tank to secure the angle iron. I have driven about 5k miles since it was done - it is holding up well and I sleep better knowing it's secure!

Wouldn't, since you were in there doing labor, cut back to a 25 gallon tank and pick up 9+cubic feet of storage?

If I were the type to worry about water weight I'm sure I'd be the type to worry about 200lbs of water sloshing in a corner/braking.

As long as the screws hold why do anything else. Yeah, it's a "kit" but you don't have to rebuild everything to "finished, out the door, Newell/Prevost" standards. It's now better than OEM.

Don’t you figure there was some sort of water leak from somewhere that caused all the wood rot? How are your storage bays attached? Mine are just bolted through the plywood floor. Seems like the root of the cause needs to be found. Or maybe you did and just didn’t mention it. The stuff you did looks great. But there are other threads on this forum that discuss storage bays falling off from floor rot.

I have a thread here from a couple of years ago about my main storage compartment rotting out after just a couple of years. It was made of plywood, apparently not exterior grade, and just covered with tarp material to protect it from the elements, water spray under the RV, etc.

Here is the thread:

In my situation I think the root of the problem was the lack of the covering material on the underside of the plywood decking. Anytime you drive in the rain I'm sure the spray from the road is soaking the bottom of that plywood deck and causing it to rot from below and the problem is they did put the covering on the top side of the decking so you couldn't see any of the rot. Of course NO bracing underneath didn't help matters.

After replacing the deck I just got a 20 gallon fresh water tank and did away with the 100 gallon tank. Freed up a bunch of room since we never boon dock anyway.
