With gas prices, is this the future of camping?

With gas prices, is this the future of camping?

Have you seen or want to share funny camping stories?

We camped at Cooney Dam in Montana and a couple started a fire. They went inside their camper and the wind started about 20 to 30 mph blowing embers all over.
We rushed out with a pot of water to extinguish it!

Watching a 5th wheel trying to back into a spot. Wife was on the cell phone helping the hubbie but he wasn’t getting it. After 4-5 attempts some camp neighbors came out to help - no joy. Wife was about to explode and told hubbie to get out of the #&$@ truck, told everyone else to back off and shut up. She climbed In the truck and 30 seconds later was parked exactly where she wanted to be. I gave her a golf clap and she looked over and said “I grew up on a farm”, “me too,I could tell”, I said. Then the campground got to hear about how worthless everyone involved was.

I completely agree with your very first statement. There are some trade offs to be made with respect to cost - gas, food (eat in or eat out), camping location (national brand yellow guys at 65 or state park at 25/night) - but they can be managed and I control 2 of the 3. I would rather die “experience rich” than “probate rich”. That’s why we are 6400 miles into our 8000 trip.

I rode in a bicycle club with a few members who crossed the US from West to East Coast, tent camping along the way. One pulled a small single-wheel trailer.

I wish I could have joined them when they asked, but couldn’t get away from work long enough. They were not in a hurry and averaged well under 100 miles a day. One was semi-retired and other a school teacher during summer break, so being gone over a month was part of the adventure.

Just go camping. We are halfway through a 6 week, 4500 mile trip. When we planned it last winter I budgeted $2500 for gas. It looks like the gas is going to cost about $3600. $1100 isn’t peanuts but it hasn’t dampened our enthusiasm or fun.

A few days ago I paid $4.59 for gas and I was all happy. Few months ago; I set $3.50 as my max ceiling for gas (short an essential trip). Before this trip I had paid $4.79. Yesterday I bought gas for $4.39. Despite what the experts say, I am predict gas to star falling. You can learn a lot from a dummy, and I am fully qualified

My funniest RV story may have been last night. I had the RV parked at a new and upscale apartment complex for my Daughter. I happened to be outside when the Director of Security (Police) was knocking at the door. No one was inside but TV and genny were running. After giving me the 3rd degree he says I was parked in Residential only spaces ( about 5 spots); so he said I had to move to Visitor parking at the back. But he wanted my info and I told him why I was there. So being the good steward I am, I pull up cones and get the rig ready to move to the back. 5 mins later he comes back and I am thinking oh oh, I gotta leave now. But he shift gears and pointed to a very nice spot up front & adjacent to my daughters apartment and he says, if you can get in there, you can stay there as long as you like It was dark and he actually help me with hand signal backing into the spot. I am thinking he had actually went back and validated my credentials? But today I notices that it is actually helping the Apartment complex to gather attention. Office Manager saying people asking about the brand new RV outside (actually almost 4 years old but they don't know) wanting to know if it is some type of prize gimmick involved for move in Just goes to show attitude determines altitudes even when the deck is against you.

What's this "budget" thing you speak of?

Gas level goes down, pump nozzle goes in the fill receptacle, gas level goes up, credit card balance goes up until paid in full when due. Rinse, repeat.
I don't have any problem spending the kids' inheritance to have fun and improve my quality of life. When the money pot gets too low I'll worry about it then.

Pretty much.

Set
is the key.

If I had a budget, I wouldn't have a budget because I wouldn't have a toy that needed a budget.

But
I will fold on something no longer worthwhile time wise or financially.

Fold if you don't have the hand.
That pair of queens you opened with might not be carrying you through.

Kenny Rogers says:
Sell the rv now to avoid the rush.

That's how I do it. Pull in to a station when I need gas. Put credit card in slot, pump until machine stops. Drive on down the road. Repeat as needed. The fuel I buy this month is paid with next month's money which isn't as valuable as this month's money. I figure with inflation, I'm coming out ahead.

I agree 100% we now live by this after seeing many die with money in the bank and living a unhappy life trying to save and not enjoying there hobbies.
Lora mother just passed and she retired from nursing at 59 and told us for 30 years retire and play!
So we both retired at 62!

I used to joke about:
Last breath, last nickel.

Now that I'm older and having lived a self reliant and very fair to others type life..while watching some others take advantage of the system...I'm considering a bit of a revision to:
Last breath. Bad check.

I am retired. So high fuel cost goes almost in the noise when you stay three to four weeks at a time and relax.

Just like watching everyone hook up. Once in a while you see someone that has never experienced a leaking black water valve. Opens the cap! Well a few choice works with brown trout and wrapping paper all on them. Then, much later on, you explain that there is an external valve that can be added to prevent this from happening. Great for trailers and fifth wheels, but not for Class B or A's.

Our preparedness met opportunity. No limitations here, just use common sense. If you've properly prepared for retirement and bought a motorhome to travel the country, gas/fuel prices and inflation in general should have been in the plan.

I don't know what properly preparing for retirement means, but my mailbox money keeps showing up and as long as it does, I'll keep playing at living.
Inflation has not put a damper on our actual plans for the summer. Still taking a 4000 miles trip, it's just gonna cost more. Still bought new golf clubs and play a couple of time a week, just cost more. Life goes on and as long as socialism exists the government will keep trying to make us all equal. Nothing we can do about that.

We will never be ALL equal. We were in Maui and Kauai last November and saw many private planes parked in a secluded area. Do you think those class A owners worry about gas?

My 2 sons work for Goldman Sachs and claim they are making more money now

Well I ain't retired Like my grandmother use to tell us, "I hope I live long enough to retire." In the meantime, I whine & complain every time I am at the pump of late. My frown is just a smile upside down

Thus far $4.79 is the most I have ever spent on gas. $4.39 was the lowest on the trip. Gas was $1.99 when I bought the RV. Someone mentioned a budget? Don't think I even budgeted for gas, but I had plenty of reserves for repairs that thus far have been way overstated. It evens out in the wash
