No Generator?

We're about to downsize to (possibly) a 2009 Phoenix Cruiser 2551 (26 footer). It says it is "Generator prepped" which I assume means that it has no generator BUT it does have a 2000W inverter. If we don't anticipate boondocking/Wallydocking, how necessary is a generator? Please keep responses simple and to the point. Thanks.

Ask yourself: What do YOU need a generator for?
You've already eliminated boondocking/overnighting.

People also use generators for:
Running the A/C underway in very hot weather
Emergency backup power for the escape pod in case of power outage at a park or home.

So now you can decide if YOU NEED a generator or not.

That's why I'm asking. I DON"T KNOW! If I knew, I wouldn't ask.

And I've responded with examples of what generators are used for besides boondocking and overnighting. You should now be more informed.

Others may come up with more uses that I haven't thought of and then you will be even MORE informed.

IMHO a generator gives one more options where they can stay.

I would imaging that installing a generator in a "prepped" MH might be quite expensive. If you find you need a generator occasionally, you could get one of the portables and run what you need.

I have had our new Thor Axis almost exactly a year, have camped for about 50 nights and have used the generator on purpose (not periodic exercising) only once: to keep the coach cool while my wife shopped in a grocery store. That is it.

Well that reminds me of another use for the generato:

To keep the RV cool for pets in the summer while shopping/site seeing.

If your intent is to spend all your time at sites with shore power, then you obviously have no need of a genny.
Want to stay at a National Park or National Forest campground? (Which have some of the most beautiful campgrounds I may add) They have no power. If you intend to stay in say Glacier or Yellowstone for example for more than a few days, you will have no means to keep the batteries charged. (Solar doesn't work well in a Ponderosa pine forest)
OR can't find a campground with hook ups along your route? Spend one night boon docking in an interstate rest area on a hot humid night and my guess is you would wish you had the genny.
Last summer we spent 6 weeks on the road. All but two nights were spent with hook ups. The two nights we spent in rest areas we were damn glad to be able to run the A/C.

We use it driving in hot states so dogs stay cool.
Also we park in many cities to site see and use for dogs

Another use is topping off batteries. If I were you I'd pick up a Honda 2000. If you always have hookups, you probably won't even use it.

Seems odd that this coach has a 2000 watt inverter... what kind of battery bank does it have? The ONLY way (without a generator or solar) those batteries will get recharged is from the coach alternator or shore power.

So be careful to not set yourself up for constantly struggling to keep a "2000 watt capable" battery bank charged. Without a reliable and "easy" way to charge, you may trash the batteries... unless they're lithium.

There is a reason 99% of all RVs come with Generators.

Do not buy without one unless you plan to install a very elaborate Lithium battery system and dump that 2,000 kw Inverter to power your entire RV.

BTW, it is easy for one to say you don't need one if they already have one.

Yes, I read all of the posts.

Where did I say a post said "the OP doesn't need a genny?"

How about keeping cool while working on the RV at home in 90 to 102 degree heat outside. A great tine to exercise the gen while getting inside stuff done.

If I'm at home the RV is plugged in.

Ahhh but what about when at home getting ready to leave? You unplug to put shorepower cord up, but you have to run in and out the house to get things before everybody is all set to go. Without that genny on the coach would get hot within in 5 minutes.
