I looked up the differences between DOT and ASME tanks, this is what I found.
DOT & ASME Propane Tank Differences
Should I buy a DOT tank or an ASME tank?
Here are the basic differences?
ASME Tanks.
No Recertification period required.
Slightly thicker steel.
Slightly heavier than a DOT tank of the same capacity.
Designed for stationary installation. Not designed to be moved when containing propane.
Design & Standards are governed by American Society of Engineers. (ASME).
DOT Tanks
Recertification period requirements are:
12 Years from date of Manufacturing, then every 5 Years.
Designed for Portable Applications. Can be transported with propane, if done so according to Code.
Design & Standards governed by Department of Transportation (DOT).
So the 12 years only applies to the first inspection for DOT tanks then every 5 years thereafter. Thanks to all those who replied, your responses helped me figure out what to search for.
Also, not all vertical tanks are DOT tanks. You can get ASME Vertical tanks. Tanks under 40 LB must have OPD valves. even for ASME tanks. I have not been able to verify whether or not ASME vertical tanks require DOT recertification.
