Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta 2016

Did anyone from the forum make the trip for the event this year? If you did, how were the sites that are in the no hookup area? My dear wife has stated the she wants to go the event next year for her birthday trip. Just trying to start the process early. Reservations open up in a couple of days. Thinking of staying Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. Any help will be much appreciated.
This is going to be a big trip for us as we are south of Daytona Beach, distance is around 1750 each way straight through. Also starting to plan the route and things to do along the way out and back.

We went a couple years ago, but didn't stay at the event, in my opinion it's too crowded & way too expensive. We stayed in a KOA in Bernillio just to the North on I25 & they told us to go to a mall parking lot & a shuttle picked us up & dropped us right at the gate, it was a very good plan for us & the KOA has free pancakes every morning. If we were going again I'd do it the same way, but maybe stay at the Route 66 casino about 6-8 miles west on I40, they just recently opened up their rv park & it's huge & very nice, a nice casino also if your into that.
