Smile Albuquerque balloon fiesta

We're taking our year-old ACE 29.3 to the Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta in early October. We've never boondocked before. Any advice?

Penny

The hardest part for most first time boondockers is water discipline. Not only do you need to monitor fresh water but gray tanks fill faster than you realize especially when washing dishes or taking a shower.

Other than that, enjoy.

Boondocking

Thanks, Dave. We will be more cautious because of your advice.

Penny...why are you boondocking ? Unless you cannot find an rv park with vacancy...which is possible...there are a number of rv parks in Albuq,,Bernalillo...and Rio Rancho.

Penny,

I use to live in Albuquerque. My father was a professional photographer and took hundreds of Kodak moments of those balloons.

But, as far as the Balloon Fiesta. There are some Casinos along the Rio Grand just outside of Albuquerque and some of them allow RV's. You might look on line and see if you can get an RV site there. If you are taking a toad you can then drive to see things. If you get a chance the Tram ride up to the Sandia Crest needs to be a "to do".

Doc

We stayed in Bernalillo KOA & drove to a mall & they shuttled us to the front gate of the balloon park, as are as I'm concerned it was the best way to attend as the traffic is HORRIBLE when you get close to the balloon park.

Penny ... we were at Bernalillo KOA in June...as you know it is a nice campground, albeit secluded.
I am from Albuquerque and go home often. The Santa Ana Casino at Bernalillo does not have rv sites. They might offer boondocking.
However, there is a small city owned campground just east of it on a bluff above There is another Casino north on I25..near San Ildefanso Pueblo, if I remember correctly...I do not know if they offer camping.
There is, also, a campground in Rio Rancho, behind the Walmart Store.
We have not stayed there, as we, have in the past parked in our families driveway. With the Axis, and trailer, we needed more room hence the KOA.
Your situation now, is finding someplace to park, as most of the accomodations during the Fiesta are booked a year in advance.
There is camping facilities at the Balloon Park, itself, but doubt at this late stage you will find vacancy.

True..when we were kids, it was not an issue...now the Fiesta is so BIG, Albuq. is bursting at the seams during that time slot. Traffic is a beast around that area of town. If you get a place to park your rv, find a shuttle !

good luck and keep us posted on what you find !
