Atlanta Ga Traffic

Sunday we will be traveling N/B on I 75 through Atlanta. With the bridge out on I 85 will this cause any traffic problems for I 75. Thanks in advance for any information.

If you're just passing through, take the bypass (I-285).

We have passed through Atlanta many times...we have found the most efficient way...especially if your are coming through Sunday morning...is just stay on I75 straight on through....when coming from the North, we always plan our trip where we come through Atlanta early in the morning before any traffic issues evolve.
Our return trip always is an alternative route to avoid Atlanta traffic like the plague !!

At the moment, though, if you are going Northbound they have a section of the road closed because of a bridge collapse:
I-85 collapse in Atlanta: What caused it? - CNN.com

Ah if you are staying on I-75 you may be ok, given this text in the article:
Quote:
The fire started Thursday evening under an I-85 overpass in north-central Atlanta, north of the highway's split with I-75. It grew into a massive fireball, sending thick smoke onto the highway above.

Stay on I-75 straight through. The earlier, the better.

I have to be at the Safe T factory in about 3 weeks for an install. Have been reading everything online about the Atlanta road collapse, which is closer to downtown. I'm still unsure how it could effect other parts of the cities weekday traffic patterns especially this time of year with everyone migrating north.

But I agree with going through on a Sunday. Unless the other million people leaving Florida this week are thinking the exact same thing!

I75 northbound is open all the way through the city. The only other real option is to go around I285. Now, 285 is a lot more miles. The bridge that collapsed cut off I85 and 400 from down town. So, everyone going north will go up I75 or use surface streets.

Here is a map of how the interstates are affected: http://www.dot.ga.gov/AboutGeorgia/D...tour%20Map.pdf

What I'd recommend is that about 30 or so miles before you get to Atlanta, use a traffic aware app (Apple Maps, Google Maps, etc.) and see what it suggests. I75 will have more traffic than usual, but so will 285 (and it is much longer). Do whatever it suggests. There may be more traffic on I75, but it is much shorter.

I've lived in the Atlanta area for almost 30 years. Fortunately, we are in Utah for the next 2 months. Hopefully, they will get something done before we get back and have to go downtown to a doctor's appointment!

Take 285. 75/85 is closed around midtown

I just saw an article on CNN that had a traffic map of Atlanta during Friday morning rush hour. I285 was a parking lot. There was a slow down on I75 near where I85 used to split away, but nothing nearly as bad as I285.

At 10:30 in the morning if you check the Waze app it will show (Sunday) traffic moving very good around the west bypass in both directions. I need to check the app Monday morning and again during rush hour.

I am sure others heading north out of Florida next week will report back on how it was also.

We passed through Atlanta yesterday morning.

We successfully passed through Atlanta via Hwy 75 without slow-down yesterday morning. We were Southbound but did not see much trouble Northbound in Atlanta. I believe we were successful because we timed it so we hit Atlanta at around 5:45am. (We boondocked at a CrackerBarrel just outside of metro Atlanta the night before and got up super early to hit the road. I guess thats what they call "pre-positioning")

BTW, did see several roll-over RV/Trailer wrecks on Hwy 75 yesterday between Macon GA and Tampa. These did cause significant snarls in traffic Northbound, but would be unpredictable.

In general, once dawn breaks there is high volume on most of Hwy 75 this time of year. Lots of RV's/travel trailers going North. Lots of minivans with car-top carriers(spring breakers) going South to Disney.

Best wishes for safe travels.

YES ! THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT WE DO, and it works ! It is really nice having all 4 of those lanes, basically, to yourself !!
