Avoiding tunnel in VA

We are heading north next week to DE. My GPS showes me having to go through a tunnel around the navy base in Norfolk? Is there another way to avoid that route ? We do want to go over the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. We take I95 to Rt 58 in Emporia but when we get to Norfolk thins get crazy.

Been through/over that tunnel/bridge with our 5th wheel. Not much of an issue--a trooper did pull us over to ensure the propane was off before entering but that was it.

Unless there are other issues preventing you from going that way... (like protesters or something)

Our RV GPS wanted to re-route is around the tunnels to get to Virginia Beach a couple weeks ago. It was going to add another 45 - 60 minutes to the trip. After doing some research we ended up going through the tunnel on I-64 on the way down and the tunnel on I-664 on the way back. RV's just need to pull over at an inspection point just before the tunnels to make sure the propane is turned off.

If you are driving from Fl to De through the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel there should be no reason to go through the Hampton Roads Tunnel, and if you take I-64 through Chesapeake to 13 instead of I-264 through downtown Portsmouth and Norfolk you will avoid the Portsmouth Tunnel and associated traffic. Google says this adds 3 minutes but in my experience it is the fastest route.

And I think you were referring to the Naval Shipyard, not the Navy Base.
