Chesapeake Bay tunnel and bridge

Looking to take a trip to Cape Charles KOA . I have never been on this tunnel and bridge system and was wondering if this is the best route. Any ideas!

Been across CBBT on my trike and in SUV but not, YET, my Vegas. Never had any problems and always saw RVs on the roadway. Will definitely be faster and cheaper than the option of having to

around.

Check the CBBT website for rates for your RV - paying attention to such things as height and propane.

Never stopped at the KOA but the entire area is worth the visit. Have an enjoyable trip.

How many miles long is the tunnel, bridge and "white knuckle" system? We'll be heading that direction soon and don't want to loose my mirrors. Tfryman's description (in the link above) reminded me of a scene in Trains, Planes & Automobiles when Dell Griffith got both sleeves caught on the sides of his seat.

17 miles shore to shore with two, one mile long tunnels. And not my description above, I just provided the link to PNTR10's description.

I have traveled the CBBT several times in both of our RVs. People who drive in tunnels always seem to slow down and you feel like time stands still. The CBBT tunnel lanes are plenty wide enough and the perception of semis coming right at you is misleading. Having lived in Hampton Roads for over 30 years, tunnels were a normal thing for me. The CBBT tunnels are actually better than some of the other tunnels in the area in terms of width and space. The real white knuckle driving is when the wind picks up and you are on the bridge area away from shore. Then you may be pushed sideways into the lane next to you. The old set of bridge roadway doesn't have much of a shoulder but the new set of lanes does. Just take your time and you will be fine.

As far as if it is the best route... definitely. Cape Charles KOA is right on the other side of the CBBT on the Eastern Shore.

Check out Cherrystone campground vs the KOA. Cherrystone has a lot more amenities and activities, everyone one this side of the bridge goes there. They have a shuttle into Cape Charles also. If you stay there get the pull thru site. Another popular campground further up the shore is Tall Pines Harbor. Enjoy.

X2 - I lived there for not quite as many years as you and traveled across bridge more time than I'd like to count (lived on eastern shore then Hampton). Better now there are twin spans - but still single lane in tunnels. Plenty wide. You should have no issues. Enjoy the view!!!

Cherry stone was my first choice they were full so Kia it is I heard that they did a lot of remodel lots of upgrades

The CBBT is a nice ride in the RV and you should not have any problems. However when you are going north DO NOT STOP AT THE OVER LOOK when you are leaving you are turning into a tunnel and can’t see the on coming cars. I pulled out of there in my old RV and ended up in the on coming lane with a truck coming at me.

Not sure about this anymore but...there was a time - many many moons ago - they would not let you travel through the tunnels with propane? I was very young when I heard this and may not remember it correctly. Was it ever true and/or has that changed?

U will need to have bottle closed, but you can have it on board.

Not to encourage lawlessness, but how in the world would “they” even know? I doubt that I would stop and turn off my fridge for a tunnel....

They pull you over and visually inspect: make you show them that the valves are closed. At least that is what they did to us about 5 years ago.

The toll booths going into the complex at each end are gated. You have to stop and they usually ask you if your propane bottle is closed. They will sometimes have you get out and show them.

At the toll booth they ask you if propane is off. They did not inspect us. There was a tunnel in Norfolk that has a mandatory pull off lane for inspection on the right side. They did not look at our tank but did take down our license plate number. If I remember correctly it was the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel. Be prepared, there is big signs that all motorhomes and trailers must stop.

Being from Seaford, De. I have crossed it many, many times. Don't know what direction your coming from. From Seaford your go 13 south. It's a pain going north thru Newport News and I've taken a wrong turn several times with all the construction. Just pay attention to the signs and you should be fine!!! Check out the restaurant, it has some nice souvenirs and food is not bad. Lots of good restaurants in VA beach too....

The KOA is about 5 miles from the north entrance. No propane restriction. There is actually 2 tunnels between each tunnel.

I have been through that area this past March. Checked the web site for the tunnel and bridge which says no propane. I opted to take the detour. It's not clear on the web site that you are ok with tanks shut off.
