Dispersed Camping In Oregon Closes Due To Excessive Trash

Nice huh? People...

While they mention C-19 is affecting state parks (closed), they cite garbage as the reason for these closures.

So many of 'today's' campers, certainly not all, seem to subscribe to a different camping culture that that which prevailed years ago. The campers that we knew and camped with would never dream of leaving even a trace of anything behind when we or they would leave a site. It seems like so many today, just seem to assume that a 'maid' will come in and clean up after them. Too bad, they ruin it for everyone.

Angry

You are so right about what seems to be a different breed of camper but I think is becoming more of a complete mentality change! I also used to use the word common sense to explain things but have found that that has changed too. We camped sometime back in Pismo Beach, Ca and one group of questionable younger people, left every bit of waste that they had when they left after staying just one day. It was just incredible, we helped the ranger pick it up in a bag for the dumpster which was less than 25 feet away!

And of course COVID-19 won't just go after the idiots in the world so we can thin them out of the herd.

Be proactive

I suggest if you see a campsite that is looking untidy while occupied, take some photos with identifying licence plates. Then if they leave the mess, you have something for the rangers. If it is messy while they are there, chances are slim that they will clean up before departure.

In our travels we've found with the younger weekend warriors that this typical of how they camp. Come in noisy & messy then leave the same way, with their dogs barking kids screaming constantly, kids & dogs running by or through everyone's campsite, music blaring, with all their trash & dog crap left behind for someone else to pick up, not mention following them after they've been to the dump station. I could never be a park host!!!!

It's a generation of folks who's mommy wiped their a$$ every time they went to the bathroom. They raise theirs the way they were raised. The path irreversible.

I live in Eastern Oregon. The dispersed camping ban only affects State Forests, which is a small part of Oregon public lands. Eastern Oregon is dominated by National Forest and BLM land, with quite a few Oregon State Parks, where all the campgrounds are still closed. Dispersed camping (non-campground) has always been a problem and it's really bad now because A) Lots of people have been off work and have time to camp, and B) There's not much else open to do, and there's spillover from established campgrounds being closed. So all over the backroads in the Blue Mountains of NE Oregon, anywhere that's reasonably flat accessible by a road has a camp set up, usually with a multitude of UHV's; four wheeler ATV's, side-by-sides, and motorcycles. Add to this a redneck mentality that's shared by many around here and a steady flow of alcohol and...there you go. I should add that we've had a lot of unseasonably great weather, but that's over with now.

I'm sort of surprised the Feds haven't shut down dispersed camping in all the National Forests. The site we occupied a few weeks ago had fresh human waste with toilet paper all over the place, even right next to the road that's been getting a lot of traffic. It took some shovel work to make the site habitable. There were a lot of broken beer bottles we had to clean up to the best of our ability; the penalty for putting broken glass into a campsite should be public pistol whipping in my opinion.

There are a lot of good people out too that leave there sites better than they find them, so hopefully things are settling out with workplaces opening and a whole lot of very wet weather!

This "soiling" of natural areas is not something new. I remember just this sort of thing when I was a kid back in the 50's. There is just more of it now, and with the advent of 4x4's, RV's, ATV's, snowmobiles, kayaks, rafting, etc the range of litter and trash continues to expand into even what was once remote areas.

Found this amazing place outside of Salina. Sites here had trash in them too. WTH? Grow up people. Mommy and Daddy aren't around to pick up after you now.

I digress Someone left a HD garbage bag hanging from a tree that was about 1/4 full. I took it around to the other 8 or so camp sites and got it about half full. I was able to dispose of it at a truck stop.

Leave it better than you found it, if you can.
