Eclipse camping?

Anyone else going camping to see the Eclipse? (I've noticed a couple of mentions around here about it.)

We signed up for a package (provided by an Astronomy podcast) where they will bus us to the best spot to see it--trying to avoid any bad weather. Will be camping nearby.

In preparation I already have a set of Eclipse glasses and made a "filter" for my DSLR so I could take some pics. Here is a test pic:

I'm curious what other people will be doing?

Staying home. We are in the 1% zone. The area expects thousands of visitors.

There is an article in this month's Escapees Magazine about the eclipse to include a list of sample "Totality Locations"

The magazine also has a good article titled "Dark Sky Campground" which is about good camping locations for star gazers.

Have a reservation at a park a little west of Franklin, NC. Right in the zone! Jamiegeek, how'd you make the filter for the DSLR? Got my curiosity up.

I picked up some Solar Filter sheets (Amazon) and hot glued it to a shipping tube that just goes around my zoom lens. I then wrapped the excess around the tube and used rubber bands to hold it.

Now that's clever! Thank you, I'm going to give that a try. Good luck with the eclipse weather!

Well I can't claim that I came up with it--it was on the instruction sheet that came with the film LOL.

Off to see the eclipse

We are heading from South Florida to Eutawville, South Carolina to see the eclipse. Who knows if the weather will hold for us to see anything, but I ordered eclipse viewing glasses from Amazon (they can be worn over regular prescription glasses) and I also ordered 2X eclipse viewing binoculars--just enough magnification to see the flares.

Here's to all of us getting clear views, and great memories!!!!

We are planning on heading to Central MO, since our house is on the edge and would like to try for as center of the path as we can get.

We have reservations at a rev park near St George, SC, in the total path. Expect major congestion throughout the path across the country. A once in a lifetime event for us!

We agree that I-95 north out of FL & GA will be heavily congested--that's why we plan to get to SC on Sat the 19th and not leave until Tuesday morning the 22nd. At least if we hit bad traffic we have our own bathroom and kitchen. Priorities!!
We will be just a little north and east of you Mr Sunshine. Camping at an RV park on Lake Marion.

They are expecting tons of traffic all across the country. So much so that as part of a NASA Science briefing they had a presenter from the Department of Transportation--a first for a NASA presentation.

We are an hour south of St. Joseph,MO which is supposed to be one of the prime sites...hoping for NO CLOUDS !! Clouds are the culprit to successfully viewing and photographing an Eclipse.
Hoping all of those who are interested have purchased their US POSTAL SERVICE ELCIPSE STAMP AND FIRST DAY COVER !

or...Wyoming ! go to the website: Eclipse2017 .. you can enter your
zip code and allow the site to use your location in conjunction with their GPS .. and you will find out where the nearest Total Eclipse will be ...

Wyoming is supposed to be optimal ... however, many folks are coming to St. Joseph, MO ... all hotels and campsites are booked well in advance.
From the site, you can see the ARC which is 100 miles wide for best viewing.

We made plans before we bought our RV. Flying to Nashville, staying with some friends. Thanks for the ideas here, going to check out the glasses on Amazon!
