Depends on what you want to do and how long you have. I have taken that trip dozens of times and I stay away from I 95 North of SC as much as possible. If I am in a hurry, I go up I 95 to I 77 and then work my way to I 81. I really like to stay off of I 81 as much as I can, so often I take US 29 East of the Appalachian Mountains until I 64, then cut up to I 81. I’m usually stopping off in RI so I take
I 81 to I 78 to I287 and go over the Tapanzee bridge and up I 95. Depending on where in MA you are going you could cut up to I -84 and go thru Hartford to MA.

If I have time (and I usually do being retired) I start my trip up I 75 to Macon, Ga and then up US 129 working my way to Asheville, NC and the Smokey mountains and the Blue Ridge Parkway for a week of so.

Staying off I 95 saves lots of money and traffic. GPS says it’s faster, but it almost always is not. Stay away from DC, the New Jersey TP and NYC.

we cut across from 95 via 64 to 81 and then 84

Only toll to CT is 1.50 crossing river going in. Easy Drive!

cost boat load and traffic is insane staying on 95 from DC up!

I agree with all above. 95 from DC to Boston really is horrible, and the tolls will add up very quick. The George Washington is always backed up no matter what time you go over it and can cost a fortune to go over. It is between $44 and $88 depending on your set up. Go a little West and have an enjoyable drive through some beautiful country!
