Fall trip to MI UP and POI
Left 2 weeks ago this Monday from GA on our trip thru TN, KY, IN and now in Traverse City, MI. Rain has followed us continuously practically every day but today. Heavy storms thru here last night/early am. Sunny but cool today. Day trip to Sleeping Bear Dunes and Fish Town today. Dunes are awesome but exhausting for an old man to climb. Fish Town was a great little fishing village where we enjoyed some fried perch at The Cove.
Leaving out early tomorrow am with a 2 night planned stay near Ann Arbor (Jackson, MI). Leaving Sunday to see the Big House and on to Eerie, PA to sight see. No trip planned after that for now. TBD.
Enjoying our Axis travels even though the weather hasn’t been very cooperative.
Picture of the dunes and Fish Town to follow.
Larry

Thanks for that report. We lived in Traverse City for 9 years back in the 80's. I sure miss that place. Fish town was one of our favorite places to visit. Glad to hear you are having an enjoyable adventure.

Mountainsam..,thanks. Don’t think you would be missing this weather going on around here now. Windy, damp and low of 37 predicted tonight. Rain coming in again this weekend and next week. Filling up this big ol lake. Was planning on going on up to Soo Locks but weather even worse there so we’ve decided against that. Yeah, Fish Town was a really good visit.
Jamie...that sleeping bear rose up and bit me good. Made it as far as marker 3 and that was enough for us. The scenic drive (about 7 miles at 20 mph speed limit) had lots of beautiful scenery. One in particular overlooking Lake Michigan was breathtaking but was cold and windy. Any recommended sites to see between Ann Arbor and Eerie, PA or Amish places to visit in Ohio perhaps?

Larry,
You know, Traverse City has only three seasons. Last winter, this winter and next winter. But we enjoyed it. We had two Salmon boats we fished West Bay and Lake Michigan. Had some great times up there. You may have seen the Salmon trying to jump the fish ladder up in Leland

Really? Traverse City too cold for you? LOL That is relatively balmy compared to Houghton, MI--have a relative who lives up there. You'd be missing a lot if you didn't go take a gander at Copper Harbor, Grand Marias, Taquamanon Falls, or even the soo.
As far as Ohio: If you're into roller coasters there is Cedar Point.
Vermillion, OH is a nice little town--or was; its been a while since I was there.
In fact, if you're not in a hurry just get off the freeway at route 4, take it north to route 6 and take 6 East across instead of the Turnpike. You'll save some tolls and have better views. Around Cleveland hop on 2/20 to continue.

You might want to head north across the bridge and checkout the Tahquamenon Falls region in the Upper Peninsula. They are reporting peak fall color right now!
Check out the short video from WJML news radio.

LOL...good one about the seasons and I’m a believer but it’s beautiful country and I’ll take it over the 90* and humidity we were having at home. I asked for cooler weather and wish was granted. Just didn’t anticipate so much rain and storminess. Wish I had known about the salmon jump in Leland.
Appreciate all the scenic suggestions in the UP but we had already decided to head back south and eastward and cross fingers for some sunnier skies. May have regrets later but not now.
Been traveling today and have just set up camp at a nice little private campground near Jackson, MI (Hideaway CG) 30 mi west of Ann Arbor. Will be here thru college football weekend and will be leaving out Sunday. Got to see the Big House before heading toward Ohio and most likely Erie.
Jamie...Thanks for the route suggestions in Ohio and the others also. Will definitely check those out. We’re planning on being on the road till the end of October before returning home.
