Favorite Campgrounds

Much like the "Camping Pics/Show Your Rig" running thread I figured I'd start a "Favorite Campground" thread.

List your top 5 campgrounds and/or any recent stays at exceptional campgrounds.

Here is my top 5:
  1. Disney's Fort Wilderness in FL
  2. Normandy Farms, Foxborough, MA
  3. Cherry Hill Park, College Park, MD
  4. Mt. Rushmore KOA, Keystone, SD
  5. Port Huron KOA, Kimball, MI
Honorable mention to the Petoskey KOA, Petoskey MI and the City of Houghton RV Park.

Note that my list is heavily influenced by the fact that we bring along our son with us camping (are not retired, etc.).

great idea!
it's a bit tough though to rank, like you we have young kids and aren't retired... and so we stay close to north florida and frequent state parks
It's also just based on where we've been so far. I want to try a few places that will likely bump others off the list...

1) Disney's Fort Wilderness (I wish there were more that compared to this)
2) O'Leno State Park Florida
3) Fort Clinch State Park Florida (although this was not in the top 10 before we had the MH)
4) Tomoka River State Park Florida
5) Hanna Park, Mayport, FL (my wife likes this one, I'm not sure its in my top 5, but she likes it so i like it)

Honestly, 2-5 all rank about the same

and since you have honorable mentions
we also like
6) Jekyll Island, GA (not so much for the CG, but the overall location)
7) Anastasia State Park Florida
8) Suwannee River State Park Florida
9 & 10) and not on our regular rotation, but we really liked Lake Livingston State Park and Camp Huaco Springs, both in Texas

Oh yeah forgot about this one too:
The Pinery Provencial Park, Ontario
This one would probably count as 6, or 5 bumping Port Huron off the top 5. In either case we usually go to The Pinery and the Port Huron KOA at least once a season. In fact, the thumbnail of our coach at left is from The Pinery.

West Coast Sites.

San Francisco Coastal
One of the best is Pillar Point. Except they don't take reservations :-( First come, first serve.

San Diego Coastal
Actually just north of Del Mar on the coast is San Elijo State Beach

Eastern Sierra Nevada Range (Hwy 395, south of Reno)
Silver Lake Resort for those that like to fish. Their restaurant should have a hospital cardio unit next door because breakfast is that good. Seasonal - closed during winter.

Our favorite spots are as follows:

1) Disneys Fort Wilderness Campground, Fla.
2) Camp Gulf Destin Fla.
3) Grand Canyon Campground
4) Gulf State Park, Orange Beach, Al.

We are big fans of the State parks, however, our summer vacation took us on some very nice resorts, and some not so nice "campgrounds".

This spring and summer we'll be hitting the road on multi-week excursions so I'll be able to expand my list. So right now it's:

1. Disney World Fort Wilderness (always clean, quiet, and have met lots of friendly folks)
2. Hershey Park Campgrounds (located about 2 miles from Hershey Park entrance and World of Chocolate, and they have shuttle buses from the campground to the park)

All,

Still in our Rookie season, but if you love to Trout fish (and gamble) try Happy Holiday RV Village Cherokee NC (HappyHOlidayRV.com). Outstanding Trout stream splits at one end of the campground and goes around the site...better fishing on the front side of the campground ($16/day Tribal fishing license required). The DW caught "first fish" before I could get my line rigged. See attachment. We caught plenty...they were swimming at 3:30 and cooking at 5:30!
Sheree got first catch.jpg

All kinds of stuff, pool, a catch and release stocked pond and friendly people. Most of the park is closed for the season...just a fraction of the sites are set up for winter rentals.

I'm and old Eagle Scout and grew up backpacking to some really nice and backwoods out of the way locations that are my favorites. Very wild and nice places in Alaska, Georgia, the Carolinas, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and Oregon, but, the motorhome can't get to those!

But, the five where the motorhome will fit......

1. Walt Disney World's Fort Wilderness, (with the kids of course)!
2. Any California beach-front campsite at sunset, (except Dockweiler and Huntington Beach - too crowded).
3. California's Eastern High Sierras, almost anywhere.
4. Yosemite
5 Yellowstone

Doc
docmike,
I've been hoping to get up to the mountains some day, looking for a nice mountain park, maybe with sites on a creek like this. On google map, a lot of this park seems flat an open and not so "mountainy"
BUT
do the sites on the side farther from the road also back up to a creek? You wrote that the creek splits around but i can't quite tell on google map. Looks like a few back up to a wooded hill. That might be perfect for what I'm looking for.... I'd love a site right on a small creek that the kids could play in, as well as a mountain to climb in the woods.
Do you think this place might be the place I'm looking for?

Blw2,

The campground is flat, it is in the lowest part of a valley with mountains on both sides. There is a pool (I'm sure a lot warmer water than the stream), but there were some younger teens tubing in the stream!!!

They have some cabins there if you are bringing a crowd.

Horse riding is available just down the road and there is a real nice Trout Pond (pay by the pound 2-4 pound trout for the "catching") just a few miles towards Maggie Valley if you are unlucky fishing. They have a real neat Motorcycle musuem in Maggie Valley (10 miles away).

Of course there is Harrah's Cherokee Casino just 4 miles away.

Likewise we've only stayed at Timber Ridge a few years ago. Sadly it looks like its gone a bit downhill.

Here is the RV Park Reviews listing of campgrounds near TC:
Traverse City, MI Campground Reviews - Best of Traverse City Camping - RV Park Reviews

If you were to go a bit further north to Petoskey, now there is a really nice KOA up in Petoskey but I wouldn't recommend staying there if all your plans are in Traverse City.
