GPS navigation issue streets vs hwy numbers

I use a non-rv Garmin gps. On recent trips, it was frustrating because it displays the next turn by street names instead of US highways. Where I was there weren't street names just hwy numbers. I spoke with Garmin to see if there were any settings for this, nope. Is this the same for the Rv Garmin version gps? What about other GPS brands?

Same for most GPS including Garmin. Displays the highway number but speaks some name that you won't find on the street signs.

Try Sygic or truckmap
They're free for a trial period.

It helps to pick up a local hitchhiker that knows the street names...

I carry a great big road atlas and use it to check my Garmin RV770. The GPS has lead me astray too many times.

Yup! A bunch of Google maps printed instructions, plus the onboard GPS... plus 2 phones that are running 2 separate non-Garmin apps...

Isn't that the truth! I've talked to Garmin about it and all they had to say is "Well, GPS is good, but it isn't perfect." Duh. Give me a road atlas for navigating any day.

Actually, the GPS is near perfect. But the "GPS" just tells you where you are.
It's the software they create to navigate that needs some attention.

You’re right about that. I had a portable aviation GPS and I could carry it and literally watch myself move around inside my house and down the driveway. It was stunningly accurate. And a little bit creepy!

We have it set to tell us when we pass within 2 miles of an antique store.
It is exactly responsible for landing me some great things in some of the silliest little towns we'd have never thought to stop in.

It tells me of railroad crossings and low bridges and museums and has about 1,000 things you can set alarms for.

I gave up on TomTom and Magellan about 2006. I only had them at all so I didn't have to fire up the laptop for street atlas. They sucked immediately and were given away.

I've had computer maps since streetATLASUSA for dos.

It used to take me 60 minutes to connect to three sats.
Before that I had some expensive system that tied into ham repeaters and I had to size maps myself, install them and have my location write over the hand done maps. Worthless in town, priceless in the desert.
We always carry Delorme atlas with us for each state... Still.
Haven't opened or bought one in years, but it's in the truck.

Sygic is my choice based on experience. It'll be between 16 and 64 bucks for cyber Monday tomorrow. It'll run on any android device including radio heads.

Truckmaps is just as good in a slightly different way.

Why not figure out were you're going before you leave? Maybe jot down some notes in a small notebook.

We seldom have to be anywhere on a schedule and the few times we do, we leave a week early.
We have a habit, a fun habit, of coming to a cross roads and actually, physically, flipping a coin.

Does anyone here do geocaching?
We did for a short bit as a way to spend some time with some friends who really liked it.
We are more into finding lost ww2 aircraft and abandoned mines and ghost towns.
It was fun being with the friends but finding $1 toys stashed wasn't doing it for us.

I've made a few caches just to be a sport about it all.
Not many people make it to the east rim of the grand canyon.

I have a Verizon cell phone and Samsung tablet with preloaded Android Google Map app. Both will show street names and county, state and federal highway numbers.

The Goldwing trike has a TomTom Rider GPS. It will show local street names as well as state and federal highway numbers.

My Garmin Drive 51 GPS divided time between the pickup and the RV. Like the TomTom GPS it will show local street names as well as state and federal highway numbers.
