Heading to Michigan next week.

Heading to MI from SC. Leaving Friday morning and driving to Pictured Rocks and staying at the Pictured Rocks KOA and doing the kayaking thing. Then down to Mackinaw Island. Spending a couple days there, staying at Mackinaw Mill Creek and checking out the tourist stuff. After a couple days heading over to Sleeping Bear and staying at Platte River. From there down to Ludington State Park for a couple days. Then driving home over two days.

Booked the campsites months ago, and was able to get them all overlooking a Great Lake (except Pic Rocks).

Besides the obvious tourist/Google search stuff, anything we might want to check out?

Traveling in 2020 Four Winds 31y.

Thanks,
Matt

Well while at Mill creek check out both the Island and the city there (Mill Creek itself is rather large and will be busy with families). Nice view of the bridge from Mill Creek's beach. (When not foggy, or hazy LOL)

Fort Michilimackinac in Mackinaw City, just after you cross the bridge, is worth a stop if your are interested in the fur trading history of the area. Fort Mackinaw on the island is also good if you are interested in history. Cover your ears when they fire the cannons.

Rent a bike and ride all the way around the island. It's not a tough ride and only takes a few hours with stops along the way. Beautiful waterside views, and if it's good and clear, a nice view of the bridge too.

I know you said you already had all your reservations; very good move; but the dark sky park at Wilderness State Park is something to check out too. Not sure exactly what programs they have going right now.

For touristy shopping Petoskey and Charlevoix will likely be right on your path, as will Traverse City. Petoskey is the larger and has Walmart, etc if you need to restock. You can also restock in Traverse City an hour or so closer to Sleeping Bear. You'll find both Costco and Sam's there if you are inclined, along with lots of other shopping and fun.

The redeveloped Old State Hospital grounds in Traverse City are another unusual stop. They include a botanical garden (free) that is still a work in progress, an arboretum of lovely old trees, unique boutiques and restaurants in what was once part of the state psychiatric hospital facility. The old architecture of the buildings is amazing and beautiful. You can even take tours of the "catacombs" if that type of thing interests you and learn the history of this very unusual place. It's a very interesting study in truly forward thinking reuse of old defunct buildings.

Moomers ice cream (on the west side of Traverse City) is a great local family operation which was voted best ice cream in the US a few years ago by Good Morning America. Of course, all the tourists go, but so do we locals. Too may great flavors to tell you my favorite, but Cherries Moobilee is a hot seller.

Sleeping Bear (just 10 minutes from my home) has soooo much to do. The Pierce Stocking Drive is beautiful. Plan a lunch at one of the picnic areas and be sure to check out the Dune overlook. Enjoy the amazing views from the top and take in a sunset if you can. So gorgeous!

It's posted, but please do NOT go down to the lake from there. Every year several very foolish people have heart attacks coming back up and jeopardize the safety of our local EMS folks who have to rescue them. It is a far more grueling up hill climb than it looks. I cringe every time the Northflight chopper flies over my house, knowing it has happened again.

If you want a real workout, climb THE dune at the dune climb area. Running back down feels like flying, (but make sure you don't do a face plant.

If you like biking, the Heritage Trail is paved and has lots of great riding miles. Go to Glen Haven for history. I could go on for ages. It has such a variety of activities to offer. You will only have time to see a fraction in a few days. It would be easy to spend 2 or more weeks at Sleeping Bear alone.

Check out Cherry Republic in Glen Arbor for dried cherries and tons of unique and yummy goodies. (Full disclosure, DH grows a lot of the cherries that go into their products.)

Canoeing the Platte River is also tons of fun. Take a picnic to enjoy while you float. It's a pretty easy paddle, except for Loon Lake if its windy. Please respect the endangered Piping Plovers who are currently nesting at the mouth of the river. Dogs are a particular threat, so please keep your fur baby on a leash if you have one.

If you are looking for a casual dinner out, The Cherry Hut in Beulah is a throwback to the 60s ish era. Love their chicken pot pies. For Mexican, the Road House in Benzonia is a local favorite (be prepared for a wait). The ribs at Dinghy's in Frankfort are awesome. I like the dry rubbed, but DH is a wet fan, so have your pick. Fusion has some excellent Asian meals with a view of the water.

And for full on family fun, check out the Cherry Bowl drive-in in Honor. Yes, we still have one. (I think Toy Story 4 and X-men may be coming up, check for sure.)

Gwen Frostic studios and print shop is an interesting stop. Although Gwen passed on several years ago, her art work is being kept alive and her studio was just named to the register of historic places. A good place to pick up some small, unique items for birthday or holiday gifts.

Hope you have an awesome trip. We love it here in the Mitten state!

On your way out of there, if you have any time and money left, try to make it to Wakarusa (just south of Elkhart) area and tour the Thor plants. Very interesting place. they also have the factory service center there if you have any issues or just want them to do a "tune up" on all your systems. The RV History & Museum in Elkhart is a must see as well and they have, as you would imagine, tons of RV specific parking and you can overnight there. Enjoy the trip. We're headed to Michigan in August and crossing over to Niagara Falls on the Canadian side if they allow border crossing by then. Michigan is a beautiful state. Only warning: Gorilla Tape everything in place at the state line...the road conditions there are the worse in the country.

The governor's campaign promise was to "fix the damn roads." We're still waiting. Although there does seem to be a lot of construction going on post-covid with everything opening up again. Maybe some of that covid stimulus money that is being sent to the state will help with the infrastructure repairs. The roads are admittedly really bad in the southern part of the state and the big metro areas. Up north they are a lot better for the most part. The areas Matt is talking about going to shouldn't generally be too bad.

Gorilla tape is just a life essential. We include it as a gag gift every time we give a graduation gift.

WOW! Such great tips on this post! We are heading up to the North Shore of Lake Superior and talking about continuing East to see northern Lake Michigan spots. We need to go back south to OK and are trying to decide on going down the west side of Lake Michigan (Green Bay/Milwaukee) or go a little farther East and come down the Michigan side (LOTS of state parks!). Thoughts?

I haven't been on the Wisconsin side of Lake Michigan, so can't speak to that. I do know that the Michigan side is amazing.

Michigan's Upper Peninsula is full of natural, quiet beauty. Small villages, spread rather far apart, but lovely solitude. On its north coast you'll find both the Keweenaw National Park and Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore park. In the center is Seney National Wildlife Refuge. The southern shore has Bay De Noc, with a very lovely campground. We were there last summer for the first time and will definitively go back. The Garden Peninsula, which we love, is another not to miss spot. Visit the restored iron smelting village state park there. I will say the campground is a cramped parking lot though. We much prefer a number of the nearby state parks and National Forest campgrounds to stay at. Quite a bit of National Forest for boondocking too, if that's your style.

Already hit the highlights of the mitten south of the big bridge in my earlier post. There are many more. You won't be disappointed. If you plan to go to Sleeping Bear, it will unfortunately be near impossible to get a camp site in the park. They're booked, but if you PM me, I can fill you in on some smaller, lesser known local spots that may have openings. (They will be dry camping though.) Depending on timing, we might even have a spot to boondock overnight in our pasture if you get in a real pinch for a site.

If you are coming south on the Michigan side, you'll eventually end up in Indiana. The dunes there have both a national and state park with very nice campgrounds. We were there in April and enjoyed that very much. Be sure to checkout the Century of Progress homes in Beverly Shores.Won't take a ton of time, but it's a quirky fun bit of World's Fair history and architecture.

Heading back to OK, consider picking up historic Rt 66. We had a lot of fun getting as far south as Springfield, IL on our April trip. If you belong to Harvest Host, the city of Pontiac is a great stop for a night. Even if you're not a HH member, do stop. There are plenty of interesting ways to spend the day (or 2) in this very hospitable town.

Would love to hear about your trip to Lake Superior. Hope you'll report on it. Both Voyagers NP and the Apostle Islands are on our bucket list for the, hopefully not too distant, future.

If you visit Houghton and want some city camping: The City of Houghton RV park is rather nice (remember city camping but you're right downtown and can walk to anything).

Indiana Dunes can get quite crowded in the summer so keep that in mind. There are other dunes down the West coast: Warren Dunes State park and Van Buren State park both have more dunes to climb and campgrounds.

If you can't find a place to stay in state parks there you could try the Covert KOA. The campground was built on an old blueberry farm and there are blueberry bushes growing throughout the campground (you buy a bucket from the store and can fill it up).

South Haven is a nice town to wander around (simlar to many of the small towns along Michigan's West coast there).

Further North Ludington State Park is quite popular and will be busy for most of the summer.

If you want a quick stop at a modest amusement park: Michigan Adventure Park in Muskegon may hit the spot (even better there is a really nice campground/resort right across the street: Duck Creek RV Park).

You could spend a month in Michigan and enjoy all of it. By all means do the upper peninsula though. It is a place unto itself. Try a pasty!!
