Did this same loop two summers ago. The roads up thru Big Spring and on to Roswell was a lot better than I-10.

We do it every year in winter. Roads are fine and scenery great with the exception of some places the roads have a course surface which cause a lot of road noise. Vegas/Axis owners know what I mean. Speed limit in some places are 80 mph and we cruise along at 60 in the right lane and enjoy the great scenery.
Traffic is a little heavy in El Paso depending on time of day, day of week, but usually moves along ok.
We usually stop over in Ft. Stockton.
Have a nice trip.
