My 2c. The northern and central routes will be more scenic, with a lot more changes in elevation (hills and mountains). The southern route takes you through Atlanta, which has legendary traffic. Parts of I75 between Atlanta and Chattanooga were rough northbound this summer, but I40 might not be any better.
I don't think you can go wrong either way. Happy trails!

I live in Ocean Isle Beach NC about an hour south of your destination. I go between Lexington KY and home to see the grandkids all the time in my RV. The northern route on I40 isn’t bad. There are some mountains between Newport TN and Asheville NC that can be slow going. After that it’s all downhill to the coast - no pun intended.

I live in Knoxville TN area and grew up near Asheville NC. I travel I40 all the time and recently went to the Outer Banks in NC and ran I40 most of the trip. Easy trip and beautiful scenery. I40 from Newport TN into NC follows the Pigeon River. Curvy so just watch your speed in the curves. 38 foot motorhome towing 4dr Jeep Rubicon.
