Highway 1 info request
Thinking of driving State Highway 1 and wondering about an RV with a Toad between San Francisco and Leggett.
It looks rather twisty. How is it for a total length 35-40 ft including the Toad?

Can't be anymore twisty than some campground roads or gas station islands/lots. Curvy roads are never a consideration for me driving my Class A with toad. The toad always tracks within the MH tire tracks.

I have done some pretty curvey road in my various RVs and have always regretted the decision. For me, it's just to much work.

It is real work and a PITA with never ending construction. Since you have a toad think about leaving the RV at one end of Big Sur - Monterey or Cayucos on the south end and do it as a day drive. With that, my guess is with all the rain lately someplace along that road will be in the Pacific soon. Happens pretty often.

I've found that the is a 40 ft length limit on sections of Hwy 1 due to the twisty roads.

40 feet is a statewide limit on single vehicles:
Quote:
Length - Single Unit: The basic length limit for all single unit vehicles is 40 feet;

There are some exceptions for busses up to 45 feet.
US 1 has a restriction for vehicles/combinations of vehicles of 4 or more axles in a limited area near Malibu:

It also looks like it is about 180 mile long drive between your two points which is another consideration to think about. With all of the rain, you might run into washed out roads along the coast.

Not highway 1 but we were going to include Channel Island National Park on our upcoming road trip. Can’t find any campgrounds. All washed out? So maybe Joshua Tree instead.

Thank you for the heads up. Those folks need water more than we need a trip.

Look up "California US 1 North Road Conditions" here. If you want to go to Leggett, go 101. Also look up any other rout for conditions the same way. Happy trails.

101 makes a lot of sense. Fort Bragg to Leggett will be the road less traveled by us.

I forgot to add, I would never go over the Golden Gate bridge with a rig. The road to it in San Francisco is made for long rigs like the road through Washington DC and the Bronx in New York. There just may not be the big pot holes. Don't ask me why I know!

Unfortunately the vast majority of the rain and snow runoff is not captured. The population in California is twice the size and still have not built any dams. Ends up in easy bay and Pacific. A gigantic issue in the food producing areas.
If coming from the south to Fort Brag you might take 5 to Williams then across around Clear Lake to 101. There are plenty of options.

By fall hopefully all will dried out and we can plan a route.
Thanks for all the info and suggestions.

I drove that section of Highway 1 many years ago in an RV (32' Class C) borrowed from my parents. First time driving an RV. The section from Highway 1 to Stinson Beach is too curvy to drive. I thought that I was going to die. You have to go into the other lane on the tight turns. North of Stinson Beach was no problem. I didn't have a toad.

The above section isn't between SF and Leggett but it is closed right now anyway.

Not quite sure why this comment is in here but it isn't really true. Almost all of the rivers flowing through agricultural areas have been dammed and the water is used for agriculture. On the north coast the rivers haven't been dammed and they do receive a very lot of rainfall however they do not flow through agricultural areas. The cost to redirect the water to agriculture would be much more than any farmer would want to pay due to the high infrastructure and pumping costs. See https://www.ppic.org/publication/wat...in-california/ and https://www.ppic.org/publication/cal...a-water-myths/

We did it with a moving truck towing a small car. VERY snug turns but do-able. Only the passenger gets to sight see as the driver will be, or better be, totally focused! Leggett is nice though! Check out the glass beaches.

Thanks again to all who posted about Highway 1. Seeing the news over the last weeks ,So glad we postponed this trip to another year. Seems to be even worse now than it was a few weeks back. But the current drought conditions are much improved.
