Interesting Places
Two weeks ago we were at Carlsbad Caverns. Yesterday we learned that a day away were locations relating to Billy The Kid and Smokey Bear that we would have enjoyed visiting. There have been other places near where we were that had interesting places to see that we didn’t know about.
Is there a site or an app that has info about unusual places to see? Maybe enter in your location to see what’s near.

We have a couple books regarding interesting sites in the US.
Off The Beaten Path ...and ' 1000 places in the US before you die'
If you Google ... the State you plan to travel ... you will find many links to State and National Parks and sights to see.
Have FUN !!

Don't forget about Roadside America - Guide to Uniquely Odd Tourist Attractions
It is the place for quirky attractions on the internet LOL.
I try to pick a few from there on any road trip.

Like in the movie Michael, where he wants to stop during a road trip at the world's largest ball of twine and the biggest non-stick fry-pan?

Good movie!
Funny.. we stopped at the worlds largest groundhog in western Kansas about 20 years ago. It was a let down but been an inside joke ever since.

Funny movie if not offended by an angel who likes women. I bought the DVD for my parents recently and I'm not sure they appreciated the humor.
To the OP's point, it would be good to have easy access to information on alternate places of interest. For example, in Houston, one could stop by the San Jacinto Monument / Battleground. And next to it is the Battleship Texas.
A lot of visitors to Texas may visit the Alamo, but may not think of visiting the site of the decisive battle of Texas Revolution.

I agree with you Chance...my home state is New Mexico...there are so many hidden 'treasures' in NM and for that matter in all States, ...it is just a matter of 'googling' that State and doing research !
Our amazement is neverending of the interesting, beautiful sites we see, when we are off the beaten path !

There is an app called ‘Aroundme’ for iPhone. We use it for everything. Gas, banks, movies, restaurants etc. best part is it’s free!

New Mexico does have a lot!
I heard there is an annual event, where they allow the public in, to the Trinity site (first atom bomb event place).
Alamogordo, I believe, I would like to see that, I've been to White Sands near there.
You must've relocated, yer profile says Kansas.

Each winter we start a rough draft of what our annual travels will look like. Generally it starts out with where we will be during what month. As the stationary winter months come to a close in SW Florida we start fine tuning and decide on exactly where we will go and what we will see. I just spend time on the internet collecting information for the areas we will be visiting. It has worked pretty good so far but does take time.
