appalacian mts.

WE are leaving in our class c four winds going east this week.
We live in Houston and will be going to La. Miss Ala. Georgia, and up that way.We might try and go to Niagra Falls
if the weather allows. We've never been east .We don't like the big rv parks. We love the natural and like to boondock when we can.
Do any of you have any input on places to stay in the Mts.I know er are doing the BRP.
Thanks

Start looking now. Many of the parks are closing for the winter.

We're "doing" the BRP right now. We are currently just north of Little Switzerland in Bear Den Mountain Resort, a true woodsy, mountain campground with cabins as well as RV sites and there are a few openings here this weekend - only trouble is a 2 night minimum on the weekend, but enough nearby to keep you busy. We'll be on the road north tomorrow to Fancy Gap Campground. The first 2 nights on the Parkway we spent at Lake Powhatan Campground, a National Park with a few electric sites but otherwise boondocking with common water spigots.

If the Biltmore Estate is on your to do list I would cross it off. Too expensive, too much in disrepair, and too long a wait for an audio tour even though you have to have reservations for the house tour.

FYI although the speed limit on most of the BRP is 45 MPH, plan on doing 30 to 35 MPH for most of it in your RV. You should have no concerns about any of the "low" tunnels south of Asheville, we have a true height to the center of our A/Cs of 12' (Thor specs us at 12'6") and had plenty of clearance.

Just ask if you have any more questions about the BRP or Skyline Drive. We also did 441 though the Great Smoky Mountain National Park.

We're leaving in the morning for a 5 hour drive to the "heart of West Virginia". Staying a week at two different State parks. We reserved these in late spring.

Our style is woodsy campgrounds as far from civilization as possible... with LOTS of space between sites. West Virginia usually does it right - and we even have electric & water! We LOVE the Appalachians - so much variety! And we're going to enjoy the comfortable hiking weather and CHILLY nights!

Lots of great places in Virginia along the Blue Ridge. We stayed in Wytheville, Virginia back in August. Mountainous area with cool old time history. We also stayed in Winchester, Virginia. Lots of Civil War stuff as well. You really can't go wrong with the mountains of Virginia.

While not on the BRP, the east has lots of Army Corps of Engineer, COE, parks around. They will be on water, usually water and electric with some FHU, and usually well maintained. BUT it's government and the federal government thinks some places have to shut down in the winter regardless of actual weather. If you don't have it, download Allstays and you can see a variety of types camping. As stated weather in the mountains can be a factor as winter gets more entrenched but it's not like in the far north with snow or freezing weather all winter. Of course the higher the elevation the greater chance weather will be a factor. I have lived in the mountainous regions of VA and WV and it will snow, but also warm up and all melt off.

Planning will be required.

If you're heading toward the Appalachians: keep an eye out for that Laundrie character...

You're right up the road from some old stompin' grounds (Marion). Try not to miss the Diamond back. Colors should be starting if not already there this time of year. Stop off at the Switzerland Cafe and enjoy the drive.

We took a trip a few months ago and stayed at a number of harvest hosts along the way and during the return leg of our trip. Biggest expense (besides fuel) was a 5 day stay at an awesome RV resort outside of Gatlinburg - Anchors Down(?) if I remember correctly. I think it was roughly 2k total driving miles.
