Maine to Florida, avoiding CT, NY, NJ

When we came up from Florida this year, to Maine, in our new 2015 Thor Windsport 34F, NJ, NY, CT were HORRIBLE on the interstate. I thought the entire chassis on our motorhome was going to fall apart!

Going back this fall, to Florida, we don't care how long it takes us, we simply want to avoid those rough roads.

Can anyone suggest a route from Maine to Florida, maybe a more scenic one, where we an avoid the large cities and pot holes and bad roads in that area?

Living in NJ, you are so right about the roads in the Northeast. Good Sam trip planner routed me from Vermont to NJ through Troy, NY. I was VERY unhappy. But to do what you want, you would have to go through Canada or by boat.
My route would be 95 south from Maine, 495 to the Mass Pike west, 84 all the way across CT and NY to 81 south. There are some rough patches, but I really don't know any other way that's better. I've never done it, but maybe take the Mass Pike to the NY Throughway (87) south to 84 west. It's a lot longer and I really don't know if going through the Albany area is a good idea.
By the way, Canada has some really beautiful rides.

It's not just the Northeast! Driving home to CA from FL, the roads in Alabama, Louisiana, and Texas were horrible.

Our own CA roads are in general very terrible condition throughout the state.

Orange County in Southern California is the only county in the state that prides itself in budgeting for constant road repair. It's to the point where they will actually tear out perfectly good streets constructed less than 5 years ago in order to cosmetically remodel, (install or remove a different style median), just because it's in the budget, (use it or lose it)!

Stay away from MI roads! (Granted not even close to your route but if you did go through Canada you may be tempted to come back to the US via MI--either in the UP, Port Huron, or Detroit--don't you'll be greeted by some of the worst roads in the nation! LOL)

I'd suggest a hovercraft retrofit to the RV then you wouldn't even feel the roads, and could take short cuts over the water.

Odd that with all of the money the various levels of government take in, there doesn't seem to be enough to maintain our roads. I'm somewhat perplexed. I know that when I added up all of the taxes and fees that I pay, add in the amount of taxes that are passed on to me when I buy something, I'm allowed to keep less than half of my earnings.

The other half is going to pay for the full pensions of all the people that built the crumbling roads in the first place.

Here in NJ, that's actually 150% of that other half.
I think in Cal it's more like 175%.

We live in Northeastern Pennsylvania and travel I81 about 4 times a week. The road is terrible. There are also long delays due to seemingly never ending construction projects and 'emergency' bridge repairs. As we have traveled in NY, NJ, CT and PA, in my opinion, PA roads were by far the worst.
