New Mexico Recommendations

G'day! Heading to the Santa Fe and then Taos area soon and looking for good places to stay in the vicinity.

And a follow-up question: we're still new to RV-ing, so I'm not sure what the options are when one rolls into a place where there are no RV parks/no availability. Is it customary to just pull up on a residential street and sleep there? Or a park? What's safe? What's legal?
Thanks!!!

Check out Santa Fe Skies

We have stayed at Santa Fe Skies and enjoyed it. Close to town and convenient to stores and restaurants.

For Taos, you might want to look at Road Runner RV in Tef River. About 25 miles up a canyon along a beautiful river. Lots to do in that area as well.

Much appreciated - those both sound great. Any thoughts on part B of my question?

Do unto others....

Remember the Golden Rule? It applies to RVing too. If you wouldn't like it if someone did it in your community, on the street in front of your home, don't do it to to others'. It's not a legal thing it is a consideration thing. So, negatory to picking a residential street at random and setting up camp for the night. Note this is not the same as parking for a few hours while you are sightseeing around the corner. Using a parking lot for overnight accommodations requires getting the store manager's permission ahead of time and not using slides, awnings, grills, camp chairs, etc. Fewer and fewer large firms allow RV overnight parking in their lots because of liability worries.
Your best bet is to do a wee bit of planning and know your options before you go--campgrounds and BLM properties in the areas you will be visiting. Planners like to at least make reservations for each travel night in advance so they know where their pillow will be parked; those who prefer to wing it should at least have the resources to locate their options on the fly. Sometimes you just get stuck--caught up in weather, a breakdown, or "it took longer than we thought"-- and your options are limited. But the rule applies, ask permission, be considerate, and if you wouldn't do it in your town or on the street in front of your house don't do it in mine.

In our experience, Cracker Barrel and Walmart are good for an overnight while traveling. Always call to confirm that you are allowed to stay over.

We are also members of Harvest Hosts which allow same day reservations. No charge but members are asked to spend a minimum of $20 at the Host Business (Winerey, Brewery, Farm, etc). $79 per year. Drop me a PM if you decide to join and need a discount code.
Many apps available to help you find places to stay. A quick search will give you a good list.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm more concerned about emergency accommodations. Sometimes road construction or weather can foil one's plans & put you in the middle of nowhere with no place to bunk down for the night. That's the type of contingency options I'm wondering about.
