Is it legal to travel New York with your guns locked away?

No
If you're not a resident of this "Mess", and the holder of a a Handgun permit: leave them home!

If you get caught: do you want to be the guy that they decide to make an example of?

There are probably some sort of allowances made for LEOs; but I'm not sure what they are...

Go to the horse's mouth, the New York Statutes regarding firearms for the definitive answer. Any place else is just an interpretation of the statutes and subject to error.

Our Constitution guarantees you can carry them anywhere you go in the U.S. State "dick-taters" are allowed to dictate how you must do this in their state. Look up laws per state as you travel and abide...don't leave them at home.

I'll somewhat agree with that. However, you have to dig/keep reading. I didn't want to insult the person by spoon feeding them info. The broader topic may also help them with another state they might be interested in.

Here's the info on vehicle carry:

That: and another three bucks... will get you a cup of coffee...

Good question!!! Anybody remember high school typing class in the 60's on the old key bangers...the IBM Selectric?

"Now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their party"

Any place that bans guns is a good place to make sure you have one!!

On December 16, 1773 someone threw a little party - the one that started it all

Rogers, I think what Bob is really trying to say is they made it extremely difficult - not impossible. Familiarize yourself with the law and decide for yourself if you want to go through the hassle.

I think the beauty of owning a gun is it's likely you'll never have to use it on somebody.

This is a great read and accurate guide:

https://www.nraila.org/articles/2015...transportation

A provision of the federal law known as the Firearms Owners’ Protection Act, or FOPA, protects those who are transporting firearms for lawful purposes from local restrictions which would otherwise prohibit passage. Make sure your weapons are unloaded, stored properly away from the driver and ammunition is stored separate from the weapon.

You can transport through NY but as stated earlier, due diligence is your responsibility.

That law was meant to protect competitors that were travelling to competitive shooting sports venues.
In this damned State: "self-protection" is a bit of a tough activity to define, and you'd definitely be left to explain a whole lot about yourself...

If you don't have a New York State Pistol Permit: leave your guns at home.
If you get stopped, and they find it: I guarantee that you'll wish you hadn't entered the State...

I agree: this sux!

IYO does what you say also apply to shotgun or rifle?

How To Use The Federal Firearms Owners Protection Act.

Must be in transit
You must be traveling to a destination where your permit is legal.

Firearm is unloaded
All ammunition must be removed from the firearm.

Firearm is in locked container
Firearm must be placed in a gun safe or locked container.

Firearm is in trunk of vehicle
Locked container must be placed in part of vehicle not readily accessible. Not the console or glove box.

Do not stop
Ideally you should not stop but you are permitted to stop at rest areas and service stations.

Funny how you brought up a party that was a protest on Taxes and/or Tariffs.
Not sure how that directly applies to Firearms, are you concerned of the price of Steel?

Rifles and shotguns are a different kettle of fish.
If you're carrying an unloaded shotgun that has at least an 18" barrel, AND does not have a folding stock:
Rifles: as long as it doesn't qualify as an "assault rifle" (whatever the Hell that it... ), and is unloaded:

But you should probably look at how they define "Assault Rifle": before you pack along anything that looks as if it might be too much fun!

Right - 'No taxation without representation' --> Revolutionary War --> US Constitution --> Second Amendment. OP wrote 'party'. I wrote 'started it all'.
