Oceanside, CA.

We're heading out to Oceanside, CA for a week of ocean air and cool temps. Yes masks and distance are in order but we need to get out of the house and it's only the second time we've been out with the new rig since we bought it in July.Click image for larger version

We're staying at the Oceanside Elk's Lodge, full hookups and about a mile from the water. We've been there a few times and it's always fun.

How hot was it? We live 14 miles southeast from there and it's 100 on our patio.

91 degrees, a bit warm, but restaurant had an upstairs patio overlooking the water. With overhead fans it was comfortable. We'll definitely go back to that restaurant again.

We’re at north Pismo State Beach
Had to run the furnace last night
But a balmy 70 today
No power-water-septic at the sites so it’s boon-docking in a state campground
Solar works great, Batteries charged throughout the day

Returning to SanDiego county on Saturday
Hopefully it’ll cool down south this weekend.

North Pismo State Beach Campground
There's also Oceano State Park with or without power
Both are state parks so you'll need navigate the CA on-line order system, set up an account.
This campground is $23 for Seniors. Water and Dump station. No power at sites, but bathrooms have hot water and pay showers.
The all inclusive sites at Oceano are $35 for Seniors

Both state parks are walking distance to the sand and water.

What did your solar cost you? I'm not proud I'll ask

My ‘17 was not pre-wired

- I had to purchase #10 wire, two strands about 20’ = $60
- two Renogy 100 watt solid panels = $200
- a PCM 30amp solar converter = $15
- connectors and fuses and cable fasteners = $25
- drill less Panel mounts = $45
- Sikaflex adhesive = $30

Most everything on Amazon, some not taxed

Total about $375, maybe a bit less

Also added the AIMS 1200 watt inverter install = about $275

I really like my set up, just like OEM.

I'm going to have to do some checking, mine is supposed to be pre-wired and has a solar controller. We'll see after the satellite and theater seating.
Thanks

I am heading to the North Pismo State Beach tomorrow, arriving Monday after a side trip. Looking forward to a quiet time in a great retreat.

My rig is a 2016 Axis 24.2 that also didn't come with any provision for solar. I installed four 100 watt panels (not sure I needed that much because we are pretty conservative in our power usage) that feed power to two Battleborn Lithium batteries via a Renology controller. I also replaced my BIRD with a lithium compatible BIM to add protection for the alternator. For the occasional 110 volt needs, I installed an inverter that feeds a couple of outlets and one of the TVs.

The ability to boondock for longer periods has opened up a lot of options for new and different camping experiences.

You’ve got a very nice set-up.

I know we’ve drifted off the Oceanside topic, but we’re all in SoCal.

Are you staying at the North Pismo Beach State Campground?

The actual “sand” beach camping or driving wasn’t yet open as of last week (Gavin Newsom’s COVID must really like the ocean, I guess)

Keep us posted on where you land up there and your experience.
That is, I got my Vegas stuck in the beach sand 2yrs ago.
If you ever go down on beach make sure you reduce your tire air to about 20# & know exactly where the high tide is.
The best time to drive & camp on the beach with our rigs is when the high is no more than 4’
The Sand gets undriveable for us once it’s above 5.5’

Pismo Beach is a great place! We don't drive on the sand. We have in the past in a car but never with a RV. Friends used to camp on the beach years ago and really enjoyed it. There's a creek they had to cross at low tide and used to laugh because a couple of tow trucks used to park there and wait. Somebody always got stuck and needed to be towed. There are several nice RV parks in that area including Pismo Coast Village (next to the beach) and Pismo Sands (you have to drive to the beach). The state parks are good for families because the campsites are bigger than RV parks so the kids and dogs have more room.

Does anybody have suggestions for RV parks near the harbor or beach in the Oxnard or Santa Barbara areas? Suggestions regarding deep sea fishing in those areas?

Oxnard is a tough one.
There’s Point Mugu State Park just south of Oxnard along PCH Hwy1
We have squatted on a couple of side streets near Oxnard harbor at night then parked in the harbor all day
We’ve boon docked one night in the parking lot behind CrackerBarrel in Camarillo (LosPosas Rd)
There’s pay campgrounds EmmaWood, Rincon and others along the coast just North of Ventura along 101. We’ve done that but difficult to get in because reservations are 4-6 months out

Above Santa Barbara is ElCapitan, Rufugio, and Gaviota State Beaches. We’ve never stayed overnight inside the park with our RV, but boon docked outside at night on our way north.

As you know, because the homeless population is so prevalent in SoCal, it’s unlikely you’ll receive a knock on the door in the middle of the night (knock on wood)
There’s cars and old old RVs/vans everywhere with people sleeping.
My wife gets a bit sheepish, but we normally arrive late and depart very early on our way to the end destination.

Besides, I believe that the cities and state have asked police to stand down on enforcement

Pismo Beach Update

Apparently, Oceano Dunes (camping in the sand) is still closed thru 11/8...
(Lots of COVID-19 lurking on the sand)
