Overnight stops that are a little different

Wow this looks pretty interesting: https://harvesthosts.com/
Pay an annual fee ($40) to be able to overnight at farms, wineries and other attractions for free.

I found it reading Mike's Roadtreking blog: Mike and Jen's Top Ten Traveling Tips - Roadtreking : The RV Lifestyle Blog
(Good tips on that post there too.)

That sounds really fun. We are always looking for interesting, different places to stop and to be able to stay overnight will be great. We will try this out on our trip next summer. Thanks for sharing.

Harvest Host

The Harvest Host program is a great way to find "free" boondocking sites. We stayed at several sites over the last few months, many of which had free wi-fi and several had water available.

If you include our name as a referral, we each get an extra month added to our subscription. (David & Kathy Boland)

Here is a shot of the Barrel Oak Winery in Marshall, VA. They even had live music the night we stayed.

HH

Been using HH for two years and very happy with them. Last one we used even had water on site to put into fresh water tank being a plus for us as I do not carry any water in tank when traveling.

This sounds great, thanks for sharing! Places like this aren't for everybody, but we enjoy them, when our agenda allows.

Keep in mind you must be a member of HH to stay at one of their listed sites.

You can't even get the detailed list unless you join up and pay the fee.

That keeps me away from signing up. If I don't know what I get for money money, I'd rather keep it in my pocket!

Well first of all there is a map you can look at: https://harvesthosts.com/maps
Which gives you enough of a clue as to how many and where--which they've cleverly limited the zoom range so you can't simply zoom all the way in to get specific locations.

Second: Its only $44 per year if you don't auto renew..if you use it twice that pays for itself in campground rentals (or even once if you tend to stop somewhere more expensive). You could sign up for one year and decide you don't like it; don't have to pay for the 2nd year. (Yeah this is all coming from someone who is still gainfully employed and not "on a fixed income" as my father is prone to say LOL.)

Not saying everyone should join just pointing out that, as far as "membership camping" goes it is pretty reasonable.

The link to the map helped me decide to join next spring.

However, I see many of their locations are wineries, and stopping at too many of those might be problematic! When the travel schedule allows, we like to explore areas off the beaten path. We often stay at WMt or Cracker Brl, and this might provide an alternative to some of those nights.

This requires planning ahead, with a call to the location 24 to 48 hours ahead. And, you need to allow time and some cash to do some shopping! Oops, there went some or all the savings from the campground rate!
