Recommendations around Washington DC

My wife and I have an event in DC in August and will be taking the RV. Does anyone have any recommendations for camping/parking the RV around DC?

Thanks in advance.

Finding a place to park your car in the DC area is difficult, never mind your RV. When our kids lived in Bethesda, Md we stayed at Little Bennett Regional Park Campground, Clarksburg, Maryland 20871 - 23701 Frederick Rd, From Jct I-270 (Ex 18) & Hwy 121, go .5 mi NE on Hwy 121, then .5 mi N on Hwy 355.

It is a bit far out, but it is nice and there is little other choice. We rented a car for the weeks we were there and drove to the Metro and parked the car and took the Metro where we wanted to go. I would only park my RV in DC if I had someone with a large gun sitting in it.

South of DC about 25 miles is this park. Travel Trailer Village
Every spring I take our unit there just to do a shakedown, because it is close to our house. It is about 2 miles to I95, shopping and some restaurants. If you have your own Toad even better. There is no direct public transportation from the park. It is 5 miles from the commuter and AMTRAK station at Quantico VA. It is on the Marine base. Local cab and Uber service too.

As far as I know, Cherry Hill RV Park is the closest to DC Cherry Hill Park is the Closest Campground to Washington, DC :|: Cherry Hill Park. Check where the event is and see is there a Metro station near it.

If you are able to get a site at Cherry Hill, there is a Metro bus stop right outside the park entrance that goes to the Metro Rail station. Here is a piece of advice from someone who lived in the DC area for about 8 years. If you can get where you have to go on the Metro, DO NOT DRIVE anywhere in the DC area.

Traffic is horrendous. Parking is impossible. If you don't have a TOAD, and you absolutely need a car, rent a car while in the DC area. Parking an RV in the metropolitan area would be beyond impossible. You might check Enterprise near where you might camp. They probably would deliver to the park.

But again, if you do not need to drive -- take the Metro -- you'll thank me later.

Definitely camp near the metro and learn to use it. We spent a week last October....there is no way I would drive in that mess. We stayed in a park that just changed hands and although the new people were nice I can't recommend it till some improvements are made.

You have two good options in Virginia, just west of DC. Both campgrounds are located in public parks in nearby Fairfax County and are under the jurisdiction of the Fairfax County Park Authority. The first is Burke Lake Park Campground:

Burke Lake Park CampgroundsÂ*- Fairfax County, Virginia

The second is Lake Fairfax Park Campground:

Camp GroundsÂ*- Fairfax County, Virginia

Both parks were established back in the 50's & 60's and are recreational destinations themselves. Campground accommodations vary at each location. I would recommend either place if you're willing to drive to the nearest Metro station. I lived in the DC area and that city is NOT car friendly as others on this forum have mentioned. Good Luck...... Joe

I live there and I drive on two occasions; after 9 am and leave before 230 because I can sue a paid parking garage during the day. otherwise after 6-7 PM, but parking can sometimes be a big deal. Same thing for parking on weekends. In the end getting there by Metro is the most ez, and if you need to in the middle of the day inside the district take a cab. Otherwise driving to DC is a PITA.
