Route 66 vs Lincoln Highway

Having just recently finished a trip along Route 66, I'm already thinking about the next trip. I was thinking of driving the Lincoln Highway which runs from Times Square in New York City to San Francisco.

Has anyone here driven all or part of the Lincoln Highway and how did you like it?

Specific sites and/or attractions please.

Wow; the things you learn--I had no idea about this.

Could spend hours reading and browsing: https://www.lincolnhighwayassoc.org/

Yes, the Lincoln Highway is older, longer, and traverses more states than Route 66...it just hasn't had as much promotion and publicity.

We are close to I-75 in Kentucky, so we will probably go north and join the LH around Lima, Ohio...then eastward on one trip and westward on another. But this will need to be a warm weather trip as the LH is farther north than Route 66.

There would be a couple areas of concern for me as far as following the official Lincoln Highway map. Going through town/cities such as Hammond IN, Chicago Heights, or even some parts of Joliet could be extremely dangerous. Another option they show going up through Chicago itself may not even be legal with some MH's, let alone safe. Keep in mind that the city had 800+ murders in 2016 and some of the rest of this metro area isn't much better.

We have the book about Lincoln Highway and have traveled many miles on it. In fact we stayed in Reno, NV off the Lincoln Hwy just last year. My wife lived on Lincolnway (which is the old highway) and we currently live just 11 blocks off the highway in Indiana. Any highway or roadway can potentially lead you into bad neighborhoods so don't let that alone cause alarm. Knowing your travel path is key regardless of where you travel. There are some really neat places of interest along the way much like Route 66 which we have also ran all but a few miles of over the years. Happy Travels.

Since I grew up in Iowa and lived in Nebraska and Wyoming I have been on the old highway in many areas. Some neat old businesses on it through some cities. You will however spend a lot of time on I-80. Like previously stated, not as famous as 66 but still interesting. Enjoy the trip.
