RV route vs. auto route

We are going from Janes Island in Maryland to Camp Hatteras on the OBX. There is almost a three hour difference in drive time between auto and RV? Does anyone know why we cannot drive the auto route? Is there a restriction somewhere that we can see? We are a small 23.5 Thor Compass.

Are there tunnels, weight restricted bridges or height issues on the auto route?

Your auto direct route I am thinking is bringing you across Chesapeake Bay and toll roads etc around Norfolk. Many restrictions through that area so you would need to look at the route and make sure you can meet all the restrictions, weight limits, heights, propane etc.

The most likely cause is the restrictions on the CBBT:
CBBT Recreational Vehicles

So long as you turn off your propane, it seems unlikely you'd have issues meeting the restrictions with the Compass though.

What's defining your "RV route"? We are driving that route next week Tuesday/Wednesday starting in Cape May, NJ, across the Delaware bay on a ferry, down the Eastern Shore and across the CBBT stopping at Little Creek campground. Then on to Avon on the OBX. Thursday we continue to Hatteras, Ocracoke, and then Cedar Island with two ferry rides. All in our ACE pulling the Colorado. Other than following the propane restrictions there should be no difference in an RV route vs. and auto route.

FYI, we have been in OBX Campground in Kill Devil Hills and it has been a great week. Weather has been perfect for us. Finally had a chance to go see the wild horses at Corolla Beach. Beautiful. OBX never disappoints.

Thank you!

Thanks for the replies! We took our chances and there was no problem. You need to turn off the propane for the CBBT but that was it!

Even route

Sounds like the settings in your gps units are different.
Just take RT 13 south thru the eastern shore and the Chesapeake bay tunnel then RT 64 to battlefield blvd south. It’s about 2 hours from Virginia Beach.
FYI the campgrounds are in rodanthe NC about 1 hour south of kitty halk

OBX Campground is behind the Wright Brothers National Park. About 60 campsites. Very quiet and peaceful. Wouldn't be the best campground if you have kids as there are no amenities for them. We like it because it is kind of central and we can go North to Corolla Beach for the Wild Horses or south toward Hatteras Lighthouse or Manteo. And plenty of restaurants around as well. http://www.obxcampground.com/
