Close by the Durango area and Colorado Springs is Angel Fire, NM. The location of the first privately funded Vietnam Memorial and Chapel in the US. It's located there on a mountain top and is surrounded by RV resorts and Eagle Nest Lake. This is truly a must visit site. Plenty of parking, great views, and awesome museum. The local Indian tribes call it "Holy Ground".

End of Oct? Start flipping coins. Could be beautiful and could be snowing. Current long range forecast this year seems to lean towards beautiful, but you will miss the Aspen colors as peak is about now.

Colorado Springs is beautiful! We are currently camped in the US Air Force Academy Famcamp. We have the #1 rated most beautiful park in the United States (Garden of the Gods) as well as the drive up Pikes Peak Highway. The Academy is also beautiful and is open to visitors throughout the year. When going down towards Durango, I'd recommend Mesa Verde National Park, and Chimney Rock National Monument.
