Walkie-Talkies Anyone?

Who uses walkie talkies to communicate with thier significate other while traveling? I pull the 5th wheel while my wife drives the Jeep. Looking for recommendations on brands/models from those who have had good expierences with them. Thanks!

I have a set we use while setting up or anytime we need to communicate while hiking, etc. They are rechargeable and work great.

We have the Motorola MS350R sets which we like. Motorola claims "up to 35 miles". Would have to be ideal conditions, I suppose. We have not tried any real distance, just
line of sight so far.

We use to use them but don't anymore since we have unlimited talk and txt with family members on our cell phones and both are connected to the bluetooth in our vehicles.

Yes, I suppose cell phones would serve the needs of some folks. Part of the reason we have a motorhome is because we like going places where cell coverage is spotty or non-existent. As in Yellowstone, Grand Tetons, etc.

Try Bluetooth GMRS radios

We use the Motorola MU350R radios because they are Bluetooth--if you are using them while traveling it can be hands-free. We use them in our RV, and skiing and hiking as well. We purchased the Push To Talk pod so we could leave the radios in a pocket or backpack. They work very well.
Ditto on the vast areas of the US--including our wonderful National Parks--with no cell phone service.
NOTE: I have NO affiliation with Motorola, other than being a purchaser of their product(s).

We enjoy using static free/crystal clear UHF radios. These are the same thing you can buy at Wal-Mart for $30-100 a pair. They operate off of FRS frequency. Wal-Mart kind are only .5 watts (1/2 of 1 watt)
Good for 1/2-1 mile depending on terrain & obstructions.....
These are 8 watts and good for 3-7mi. Very nice units !!

We use them for backing in a tight campsite. Wife has a bad habit of standing where I can't see her in the mirror then tries to give me hand signals. It's a lot less stress when she can talk to me instead of me trying to decipher her hand gestures. Of course there is the one gesture that's unmistakable, and she's not telling me I'm #1 A set of cheap ones work well for us.

We just use our cell phones when needed. Less equipment to keep up with and less competition for the charging station. They haven't failed us yet.

I tried sending the DW to Army ground guide training but she flunked out as being un-trainable. Too many unauthorized arm and hand signals directed towards the instructor and driver.

We had a much greater need for communication when backing in the 5th wheel than we do with the Axis. I don't even know where our FRS ones are now.

The Axis is small enough that it is rare to need any kind of directions when backing into a campsite. One or two campgrounds a year require additional eyes...

I thought about using the cell phones except that we have poor service where we live to begin with and need comms to turn our unit around at our house. I bought Midland handi-talkies for our purposes and so far we are very happy with them. Got them on Amazon. Don't know the model number right now, but, they are the ones with the camo colored cases.

We still keep a 15-20yr old pair of cobra radios handy and mostly use them when toad is being driven separately. Very handy to radio back oncoming vehicle or really bad surface condition information when we negotiate getting to/from camp sites on the backroads.

Okay, ours are Midland SXT 1050 model. Just bought a combination ear receiver with a boom mike and transmit button built into the wire to plug into mine while I am handling the wheel. They work great for spotting maneuvers.
