Last weekend I decided to check the tire pressures. (That adventure was in another thread)
When it came time to button things up: I could not get them to seat properly! Round and round I went... Tap one side in, and the other one would pip up.
So I walked away to clear my head, and let things sink in...
Today was the day to finish the task. I grabbed my rubber mallet, both covers, and a handful of resolve; and set down alongside the first battlefield. As I picked up a cover: the clouds parted, birds started singing, and the Sun shined brightly.
I noticed the cut-out for the valve stem!
Two minutes later: the first one was solidly in place. The second one went on even quicker!
It had been so long since I had a car with wheel covers; that I had completely forgotten the finer points of nailing them in place.
So when you get frustrated with a task: walk away, and gather your thoughts.
And a little bit of luck never hurts either...

Ha Bob. That happens to all of us. I had something similar with a wall unit. Drawers were not closing correctly. Went to bed. At 1am, still awake the light bulb went off in my head. Got up and fixed it a a few minutes. Now the wife wasn't to happy I was using the cordless drill at 1am but I was

At my age I've begun some sort of self-loathing, as I have the knowledge, but sometimes fail to put it into practice. About once a day I call myself a dumb ass after the memory banks kick in with the "eureka moment", then go back and fix it!

Hi Bob

Good thing you did walk away and not continue trying to pound them in place. I made that mistake and cut a valve stem with the wheel cover which then forced me to remove the tire and off to the shop to get a new valve stem installed. I then looked closer and saw the valve stem cut out and on it went with no issues.

Bob, the only problem I see with this practice of walking away is that you fail to complete the full cycle of insanity. Be patient next time and give insanity more of an opportunity

Once you have had them off they have a habit of jumping off while going down the highway. Put tie wraps through the cap and the wheel opposite of each other. Don't ask me how I know. (Twice)

Why take off the wheel covers to check tire pressure? I’ve never seen wheel covers that cover the valve stem.

My F550 requires short metal extensions to avoid removing the covers due to the hp valve stems

The new Alcoa wheels fixed the problem

There's a story behind that...
I have absolutely no grasping abilities with my thumbs anymore.
It's a combination of an epic case of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and Diabetic Neuropathy.
Whenever I need to work on anything: I always try to give myself about an acre and a-ha;f of free space to do my dance routine.
But yeah: a normal human could check the pressures easily without removing the covers.

Perhaps my problem is that I won't freely admit that! When I walked away from that same situation you were in, I came back with my daughter's boyfriend. I explained the problem to him, he rotated the cover a bit and on it went! He must have thought even less of me after that!
