Proactively fix Trimark latch

I saw a lot of posts about Trimark latches breaking, so a couple of weeks ago I checked my latch. The magnet wasn't attracted to the latch, which led me to believe it was pot metal instead of steel.

Ordered the latchfix https://www.latchfix.com/

Today I proactively broke the pot metal latch, and replaced it with a very durable stainless steel latch. Used a very large flat screwdriver and a pair of vice grips to break it. Inserted screwdriver between the blades, and twisted it with the vice grips. It took a couple of tries, because one side broke much easier than the other side.

My DW is happy, because LATCHFIX doesn't require the door to be slammed for it to close.

Probably should have kept the old latch for backup. If it took you a large screwdriver and vise grips to break it, it was probably not going to break anytime soon.

Good job!
After all: they never break at a handy time...

That was my thought as well. Figured I would rather replace it at a time and location that was convenient for me.

I would have done the same thing if I would have known about the problem in advance. I found out about it when ours broke on the road. Jim.

If your latch isn't broken, you have to break the original bolt to use the Latch repair kit. The repair kit is well made and works very well. Best thing is the "piece of mind".
