24.1 battery strap corrosion

While filling my house batteries I noted that the tie-down strap buckles had a large amount of white powder corrosion. The buckles were located outboard side of the battery box. Since it is next to the wall it was hard to notice. I am not sure why there was so much buildup. When the unit is in storage the batteries are disconnected. Also since the battery box is not sealed I am not there would be the buildup.

Even with the batteries disconnected the electrodes within lead acid batteries are always active and thus expelling the gases that cause corrosion. The time it takes to notice the white powder, initial stages of corrosion depends on the amount of ventilation within the battery box.

It is normal and something that has to be handled during routine maintenance.

Here is a link to the Battery University. More info than you'll never want to know about batteries.

I replaced my straps with new ones that do not contain metal. Nylon strap with plastic buckle.
