All Batteries Dead?

Just removed the cover on our 2018 31 Hurricane and could not start the engine. I did however start the engine and generator about a month ago, no issues.

After jumping the chassis battery and driving to my son's house, about 20 minutes, the house batteries seemed not be charged.

We then connected to SP. After washing, changing oil on generator all seems to be ok. Son said I must have left the switch in the "use" position, when I stared it a month ago. At my age I sometimes forget why I went into the garage.

Question is, if I did leave in "use", why did the chassis battery get drawn down? Also why did the house batteries not charge during the 20 minute drive?
Thanks BOB

How do you know the house batteries are charged now? Did you disconnect from SP before declaring everything is OK?

If you have a BIM, and it is wired incorrectly by Thor as so many are, it could have left the house and chassis batteries connected and dragged everything down. It also would not charge the house batteries from the alternator.

Thanks for quick reply, yes, after we finished housekeeping and disconnected from SP, the house batteries acted as before.

Going to test again tomorrow.

If the house batteries are completely dead you will have to hook a manual charger to them or jump them to get voltage up where the charger will take over

Have you discerned you have a BIM?
The same with the OP, you need to find what DC (charging) circuit your coach has. Could be BIM, could be BIRD or in the OPs case, I think he will have a BCC as most older Hurricanes do.

Check voltage on the house side with charger on and off, should change

Check voltage on the chassis side with engine running and off, again it should change

That verifies you have voltage and current at both battery banks

The little more difficult part is you might have to wait for the alternator to connect to the house to verify

Simple way is watching battery voltage while traveling. Alternator should keep voltage up unless a heavy load is on the inverter

When on shower power with charger on both battery banks should stay fully charged

That is the quick and dirty, somone may want to add more

All is working

Well it's been over two weeks and started the RV twice (with a few cold days in between) and all batteries seem to be OK!

I did notice on the last visit that the steps took a while before they came out.

Well, thanks to you all for your responses, I will be looking into cut offs for the batteries before I store end of season....................
