That’s a huge window

I was just forced out of the fiberglassRV Forum, didn’t think I’d have to specifically find my niche forum for this question but here goes a second attempt:

Recently purchased my first Motorhome! It has a huge hole in the back where there should be a window! The previous owner said the frame was cracked and not worth saving, then he bought a huge piece of plexiglass and that was pretty much where that project ended. I saw a thread on here at one time about building a window frame but most people were in agreement that that would be a huge pain in the butt....however, I can't find this replacement window anywhere....and a custom window would cost about the same amount as I spent on the whole thing from what I've researched.

This is a 1989 Ford Lindy
Window Size Rough Opening: 72.75"W x 22.5"H
Original windows were Hehr

Any advice or guidance is greatly appreciated!

You have quite the challenge here! You'll most likely have to fabricate something. It would be near impossible to advise you in any direction without seeing what you're working with. If the window has been missing that long and RV not stored protected, you probably have a ton of wood rot going on also. Can you post a picture here of the area? If it's really a classic unit in otherwise really good condition, the window might be worth spending a few dollars on and get it fixed professionally. If the condition of the entire unit is similar to the issue at hand...you may have a lot more concerns than just the rear window. How does everything else run out?

The camper has some seal issues and water damage from the windows but nothing major. All other systems are great. Engine has 55k original miles, i could gut/reframe/insulate/reseal windows but i can’t get past this back window that i need

The window has no value as a window that an led lamp can't provide.

Why haven't you tried a homebuilt trailer forum?
I assume if someone has a home built trailer that they would build the windows to readily available prefab window dimensions

I deleted my post because I knew ideas would not be extrapolated from it.

The forum I mention is all about window frames and suppliers and installations. They know all about them.

You don't have a window, you only have a hole.
Size, up or down, or it even remaining a window, is not important.
You're right about available windows. Choose one based on recommendations from a homebuilt forum.

Ok cool i understand what you mean, fabricating a window from Scratch may not be the number one forte of this forum I’m just looking for any help i can get. It’s frustrating that on the whole wide web not one exists in this size!

Frame in the old rear window size to something that is available over the counter. Or just frame it closed.

Just dawned on me from your comment. I’ll buy a corrugated Fiberglass panel, lay it over The hole and seal it, frame up the wall...done deal. Thanks for the light bulb!

If you decide you're going to go without the rear window You might want to run the necessary wires for installing a rear view camera while the wall is open.

If you would square up the corners finding someone to make you a window would probably be easier. Years ago we had a trailer that had a large window that was divided in three sections. A large center section and two smaller sections on each side. Good luck with your project

That’s a great idea I will definitely wire a camera, it nade Me feel a bit uncomfortable to cover it completely before but then i really had to wonder how often i would use the rear mirror all the way through the cab. I also like the idea of framing for multiple windows. The whole door has been opened now that i have incorporated using pieces of siding and framing to create a new opening

Really appreciate all of this perspective it’s helped me get over the creative hump

Suggest you do what you can to have a useable window back there--frame the opening in to fit what you can buy on the open market. Most larger MHs don't have one back there and that is almost always mentioned as something they miss.

Perhaps you could put two or even three smaller windows in that big hole! It’d be pretty easy to fabricate a spacer or two in between that would allow some stock sized windows to fit properly.

Question

If you close up that opening, are you still going to have any kind of emergency exit ?

RV window

You can look for RV parts on Craigslist, In fact there is currently a large Travel trailer for free in Toms River, NJ (with large windows) for free.

You can also post your question on School Bus Conversion Resources
It is a school bus conversion forum, a lot of handy guys there.
It is the same login as this Forum.

Recommend fabbing in an RV window that also serves as an emergency exit. (Ditto Popfla's response!)
