How about a bit of velcro; underneath it?

We use a long velcro strap that's about 2" wide that goes behind the mechanism and around the extension. Holds it tight and stops the banging.

Magnets to secure the flip up counter extension

I used a pair of magnets I had in my shop stock. I glued them to small blocks of wood that I had counter sunk drilled with a wood bit. I screwed one to the underside of the extension table and the other to the side of the wood cabinet. It works well but will release if I break too hard but that rarely happens. The magnets were about 1 inch in diameter, circular and about 1/4 inch thick. I counter sunk them to secure them better to the blocks of wood.

These magnets work great on my Axis. I put the plate on the wall and the magnet on the underside of the extension. Got the idea from another forum member. Click image for larger version

I'm going to suggest its full removal.
It fits Perfectly on either side of the BATHROOM sink where the space is really needed.

Remove the cheap and install a pair of these. Do not make noise.

Wow, I really like that suggestion! We never use the counter flip up in our kitchen because it is in the way of the door when its up. DH has been complaining about lack of bathroom counter space from day one. I think that problem is about to get solved very soon. Thanks for the idea.

Thanks for the thanks. I try to offer an alternative whenever an alternative is available.

The panel on either side of the sink removes easily. Its just stapled on.
So, we (and I think taylorbob) added a couple of internal braces while we were adding that shelf.
Mine is on the shower side, I think his is on the hallway side.
I used through bolts and toggles. It ain't comin' off.
