Axis 24.1 onan generator oil

Is it ok to just use plain ole 30 weight oil in the generator?
Or should I switch to synthetic Mobil 1 10w-40 high mileage.
We live in Maryland but will be traveling to west states next year.

The manual calls for either 30 weight or 15-40. Since you live in an area of the country where it gets a bit colder, I would opt for the 15-40 which will be fine for the warmer weather of the west too.

Would that be synthetic?

I used synthetic, yes, in 15-40 that I bought online from both Shaeffer's Oil out of Illinois and Royal Purple. I did read on a recent post that Royal Purple also has a synthetic in 30 weight but I stick with the 15-40.
