DEF and freezing temps

Hello all,

Temps here are going to be in the teens when we plan on leaving ànd overnight.

I understand Def can turn to slush, would I need to add an additive to keep it from freezing?

I understand that it will thaw, but Temps won't get above freezing until around noon time.

Cheers

According to the Internet your DEF tank has a heater that will thaw your frozen DEF for use. Just start your vehicle and drive it.

Your rig should have a Def heater. I get more concerned with diesel than with DEF. Freightliner tells me to plug in the block heater when temps hit 32 and to heat the block for at least 4 hours before starting.

Your chassis manual should tell you everything you need to know.

Absolutely do not add anything to the def tank, that will cause major damage to the system, def will freeze at 11 degrees Fahrenheit and that system is designed for it to freeze with no damage, the def tank has a rubber bladder inside to control freeze expansion, when you start the engine the def temperature gauge will will recognize the freeze state and temporarily ignore and def fault codes until the coolant temperature rises and the coolant header valve will open and allow warm coolant to thaw the tank, and the lines have electric heaters built into them to keep them from freezing, that’s why when you shut off the engine you hear the def pump running for a few minutes, that clears the lines of fluid when engine is off.

Biggest concern should be the beer in the basement freezing, splitting making a mess and contributing to alcohol abuse.

That’s why my winterizing includes switch fro beer to 86 proof or higher fluids. No freezing allowed and no ice required at the time of consumption.

There are anti gel additives to add to your fuel that I'd recommend in cold temps, but DO NOT add anything to the DEF except maybe a warm garage.
Mentioning fuel additives, if storing or your diesel coach or is parked idle as a snowbird home I'd recommend an additive with a bacteriacide into the fuel, diesel does have a shelf life & this will help keep it fresh til rolling again.
I'd add some type of fuel stabilizer, StaBil or SeaFoam, to the full gas tank, always store with a full tank, on a gas motorhome while parked for extended periods.
