Upper bunk magnet misalignment

Hello fellow RVers,
We have a 2016 ACE 27.1 motor home. One of the issues needing attention is the overhead bunk. The magnets do not align to hold both sides up to the ceiling. Does anyone know how to realign the magnets to match the metal plate?...or how to correct the problem? Thank you.

I have the same RV and never had that problem. Has it always been that way? Or a recent development? Maybe check your hinges to make sure nothing has come loose. That would cause an alignment problem.

Mine is slightly off on the drivers side as well. The 3 disc magnets are 1/2” off center making only 1 magnet contact on this side. The magnets are on plastic card that is epoxied to the ceiling. Short of damaging the ceiling by trying to remove the card it appears I’ll just leave it and figure a way to fasten it up. Not like it’s a huge issue as it only drops an inch and only over big bumps but the passenger side it rock solid.

Hello and thank you for your reply. We are the second owners of the unit so I am unsure if the defect is from the factory. I can clearly see two of the three magnets are not connecting with the metal plate. All other components of the lift/unit seem good.

Upper bunk misalignment

Hello and thank you did the reply. I am going to try and ask a Thor dealer about the issue. It seems to be a common issue so hopefully there is a fix. It makes me feel uncomfortable/unsafe with part of the bunk hanging, not secured.

Be assured, it’s a factory FUBAR. I saw from a documentary of Forrest River, competitor of Thor, the avg employment term of an RV worker is 4 months. So not a lot of talent in assembling these houses on wheels. Combine that with businesses like Camping World who’s customer satisfaction score is 1.8 /5 and you see that you will be the talent in your repair.
In all seriousness I’ve heard of nightmare coaches and then ones like mine that have just small issues, but very straightforward in a solution. If the major extent is misaligned magnets count yourself lucky you don’t have rotted floors, jammed slides and water leaks in your coach. And let’s face it, stuff breaks! This site is invaluable in finding solutions from others experiences from their trails an tribulations.

Our 2018 ACE 30.4 had the same issue, the magnets on one side did not contact the metal plate at all. I removed them and reinstalled them. If I remember correctly, the plastic piece was screwed into the ceiling, not glued.

Thank you for the reply. Do you know how to remove the magnets? I saw on YouTube there are screws under the magnet but no instruction on how to remove magnets. Crystal

You can pry the magnets out of the metal holders they’re in. Screws are under the magnets.

Magnet Alignment

The magnets align on our 30.7 but it still drops when the road is rough. Took half inch pvc and pipe tees making a support on each side to secure it. Works good so far.

I have a 2017 30.2. I'm recently having this issue where the bunk would stop just before the magnets and I'd have to push it up to the magnets to secure it. Then I'd have the bunk bounce off the magnets on rough roads.

Can you attach pics? That sounds like a good idea.

Can't get the photo to paste but it is only half inch pvc with a pvc tee on each end that slides in on each side to keep the bed from dropping inadvertently.

We have a 2016. ACE 29.3 and had the same problem. Hubby made some metal plates and installed them. We haven’t had any problem since. I will try to get pictures to post for you tomorrow.

So you guys have magnets that hold the bunk up in place? My Freedom Traveller has Pin’s that go thru holes in the bed frame. I don’t know that I’d trust a magnet.

ACE are motorized in the front over the driver. Servo-motors raise an articulating bunk on a track and it raises within 2” of the ceiling. Simple push up and magnets hold the steel bracket right against the ceiling...in theory.[emoji19]

Just curious, did your bunk always stop within 2"?
