Battery compartment corrosion

New Hurricane, I noticed discolored spots on the ground below my battery compartment. Looked, and the underside of the metal compartment floor has spots of corrosion.

Looking inside the compartment, and there are a lot of areas of corrosion on the metal floor and on other metal surfaces inside the compartment. What can likely cause this.

Batteries contain a large volume of water and sulfuric acid. During daily temperature changes, moisture condenses on the outside of the batteries and runs down the sides and under the batteries. The batteries out-gas some sulfuric acid fumes during charging. That mixes with the water and you have serious rust and corrosion. AGM or any type of VRLA batteries will solve this problem. If you choose to stick with flooded lead acid batteries, then enamel paint plus a plastic battery tray will help.

Wash them down with some baking soda and water every so often.

You'll need to remove the batteries, clean area with baking soda and water, sand, and repaint to stop the corrosion. I've seen people use the bottom half of marine battery boxes, once saw someone who used plastic dish pans, anything to isolated the battery from contact with the metal. Instead of paint you can also use the Spray and Seal stuff advertised on tv, it's actually pretty good stuff!

Repaint the battery compartment with Randolph 345 and never worry again, provided you correctly clean and prep the area.

If this battery compartment is in or below the cabin or living compartment your battery may be generating hydrogen sulfide gas which can be lethal. This gas is very corrosive and also flamable. If you smell rotten eggs do not drive the vehicle.
